New Around Here
I currently have a Synology 108j, which was my first foray into NAS, I do love it but I need more speed and more storage, though while I am at it I may as well see if I can find any improvements.

The NAS will mostly be used as a media server, though I need speed as I will be doing some work off of it too.

I am yet to upgrade my Synology to 2.2 firmware so if this does what I need, please put me right.

I am looking for a setup where my music is put into a library automatically, I like how this is done with the iTunes server, but it lacks cover art. I would also like to do the same with video and view it on my streaming media player with the cover art for DVD's in a list. I currently own an xbox 360 and a PS3. I love windows media centre, and I like the look of windows home server but you still need another PC running media centre for it all to work. I kind of want it all to work without the need for my PC or laptop on (laptop is MAC).

I see that the QNAP drives run Twonky, how is this better than the Synology DLNA server? Are my players the problem? Is transcoding possible on any of the systems? (including the yet to be released synology DS710+).

Also any advice on how to serve and then stream DVD's while keeping all the menus and extras would be appreciated. So far I am going with ISO's and then playing on the laptop with VLC, though would prefer to stream.

If I have to use Media Centre to get what I want I will have to leave the PC on more often but have all files stored on the NAS (I got one originally so I have access to all files to my laptop) but this will not help with the PS3 (PS3 is in the bedroom, XBOX 360 is in the lounge).

I guess the other way is to use my PC as a server, but I avoided that as I tinker with it a lot and don't like leaving my files on internal drives. I also use it for creative work and don't want the machine bogged down.

So, any help would be great on this issue!

David

The ability to play DVDs with menus and extras is a function of the player, not the media server on the NAS.

No NASes that I know of do transcoding.

I don't have any information about how cover art is handled in the two products.
