best nas for transcoding

hello there
first thing first, i got an ivybridge i5 machine setting in the basement doing nothing, so currently my setup is a sandigital towerraid with 8 drives attached to the pc that is acting as a plex server
now the storage controller in the pc has failed, so i am left with 4 options
1- buy a home nas as storage only and use the pc for plex server (all the nas's i found were too weak for plex transcoding + i would have to convert my pc into a mini pc)
2- buy a new case for the pc and just use it as a host (wouldnt want to do that because all the other features that the nas offers)
3- convert the pc into a free nas (dont have enough experience with it and not sure about the OS)
4- get another JBOD enclsure and convert the pc into a mini pc (not so sure about the drives idle)

so what do you guys think is the best solution ? my total budget is 500sh and all i need from the device is plex server + couch potato + sickbeared + utorrent (i am fine with 5 drives only)

you'll read here that most recommendations are to not do transcoding on a NAS. To get enough CPU speed to do so is too expensive. better to transcode in batches on a hot pc.
