Solved Best practices for sorting various add-on data on, USB or JFFS?

Just curious what the best practice is here as its JFFS by default? Its my understanding that the JFFS partition is small in the MB's but my 120GB SSD to USB could certainly hold alot more logs.

Would it be worth moving the data storage location for all the addons to the USB as well or should I just keep it as is on JFFS. Not sure what the downsides are (maybe performance hit to scripts due to additional r/w occuring?) but I suspect the upside would be less log rollover.

What logs are you talking about (be specific)? Addon scripts that install to a USB drive also put their logs there.

These addons have options for switching between USB and JFFS storage: dn-vnstat, conmon, ntpMerlin, spdMerlin.

The others in my signature don't seem to have a toggle unless its in the CLI or elsewhere.

As far as I know those specific scripts aren't particularly burdensome. Although if you have scripts that are reliant on the presence of a USB drive then potentially you could have problems if the USB drive becomes faulty. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it too much either way.

Yeah it sure does a good job my JFFS usage is hovering just under 8 MB/ 44.46 MB. I wonder how it even does this with ALL of the add-ons. Maybe you have a point from earlier most logging is likely being saved on the USB, atleast the big stuff.

I read somewhere here flash memory does not get affected by R/W so thats not my concern, mainly just data retention which I can tweak via the addon settings as now it would appear it does get save on the USB.

Reason im even considering this is my uiDivStats DB grew to 5GB and would not go any further. It gave some sqlite error, tried to fix it, then broke the whole add-on causing my to manually remove the script and install it.

I guess my real question is why would someone choose USB over JFFS? Just so they can have their data on a USB should they want to maybe factory reset their router?

That's the only reason I can think of. But then one could argue that if you store your data in jffs you can backup and restore it just by using the option in the webUI, which makes replacing or reformatting the USB drive less of a concern.

I experienced this myself, but the latest version of uiDivStats should fix it as it trims the database to 30 days. Whether one uses usb or not has no effect on that.

Awesome, well in that case ill leave everything as is. I did notice that the cache mode is disabled (cant remember but I think it was enabled before) for my new uiDivStats so hopefully I don't see the issue again.
