Bi-directional syncing

exception

New Around Here
Hi all,

For a while now I've tried to set up a bi-directional sync between two Synology NAS boxes (DS209+II, DS409). Essentially I want all data to be mirrored from one to another and vice versa in the proper way, where data added to one is copied to another and data deleted from one is also deleted from another.

I set up an rsync bridge between them, but that is not bi-directional. I've tried to get Unison to work but I'm not that skilled in compiling in Linux, and have not heard anyone being successfull at this.

Being able to bi-directional syn is important enough to buy new NAS boxes if need be. If anyone has a solution, I would love to hear it.

As far as I know, this is not something that Synology support

Many users have been asking for it on the Synology forums, myself included, so someday it may be added as a feature

If it's any use to you, I can tell you how I work around it, but it is not an automatic sync

I wanted to be able to mirror my main NAS (DS1010+) to my second NAS (DS209+II), so that if my 1010+ went down, I could just switch NAS's and carry on using all my shortcuts to the various folders, but as mentioned this is not supported

What I do as a work around is set up a network backup every hour from the 1010+ to the 209+II

If the 1010+ goes off-line, I restore the config file of the 1010+ to the 209+II, to set up the folder structure and users etc
I then use an FTP program, and use the 'move' command to move the contents of the various folders in the NetBackup folder to the root folders
Using the 'move' command, moves the files instantaneously, so my 15 folder root structure with 1000's of documents, music and videos takes less than 2 minutes to move all the files and folders

This is not an ideal situation, but it gets all your files in to the same folder structure as the main NAS in a very quick time, and you only have to set the second NAS to use the same IP address as the main NAS
