Hello, I'm going to enter in the NAS world :D
I'm looking for a centralized product where I'd like to store my photos (raw and jpg) because I work using different laptop. I'm looking for mirror raid solution: to prevent data loss is my priority. And, I'm looking for a DLNA server and a NAS to store my movies.
My NAS is going to be powered up 24h, 7 days, and I'm looking for a very quite and silent product. I like DS214se but... but.. Buffalo use a more powerfully CPU... So, what is the best NAS for my requirements?
Last question: WD red or green? :)

First of all, if you want to prevent data loss, you really need BACKUP in addition to (or in place of) RAID.

RAID will protect you against a single drive failure but it won't protect you against a device failure.

I, and many others here, would encourage you to use an external backup, via USB or even via the network to a remote server.

That being said, backup (or more importantly RESTORE) is one of the reasons I moved away from using Buffalo. The stock Linkstation FW is great at doing backups (full, incremental, differential, etc.) but has no built in mechanism to restore files, leaving one to bandaid it together with a PC and stuff, which is a big PITA.

Firstly Welcome and hope you enjoy your experience! While It looks like you are on the right track, I want to share my thoughts experiences.

1) NAS is a good solution to your stated problem of wanting a centralized solution.

1) your solution (mirror RAID) is not the solution to your stated problem (prevent data loss.) RAID is only slightly helpful in avoiding data loss. BACKUP is your solution, NOT RAID. RAID does not help in majority of things that happen in the real world that lead to data loss.

What good is mirroring then? It helps with availability. If you have a disk failure, you can replace the disk and get everything back to normal WITH THE DATA AVAILABLE. Without RAID, you would be down untill you had time to replace the disk and restore from backup. In the real world, there are many things that will cause a loss of availability outside of a single disk failure.

For a first NAS, I really like synology. Expensive, but good products.

CPU isn't the only factor when it comes to performance, so check reviews.

Lastly, RED, not Green , as a rule.
