Hi There,

I have the latest Merlin build applied, ive setup an Open VPN connection using ExpresssVPN, and everything seems fine.

Fine.......except IPTV wont work.

Basically browsing is fine, youtube is fine, speedtest are fine.....but IPTV isnt fine.

IPTV used a .ts stream, which my client grabs ok, but only streams at around 1/10 of my bandwidth, which isnt enough to hold a picture.

Ive tried 2 different IPTV providers with the same results....

Turn VPN off, and stream is fine again......

Out of ideas?

Cheers
Jeff

I can't help with the specifics of your problem but I do know that the current stock ASUS firmware has some problems with IPTV which are inherited by Merlin. In my case I see the incoming IPTV stream classified as upload in the QoS modules.

For my error I've reported it to ASUS who acknowledged the issue and hope to fix in the 'next release' whichever that will be.

It's possible this misclassification could be part of your problem

Ah yes, i have also seen that.......

Is it just the IPTV thats wrongly classified tho, all other traffic seems fine?

so you model supports adaptive qos, try fresh prince jr script

No drama,

So you suspect that this will improve QOS, and in turn help my IPTV over VPN issue?

the only way to find out is to try it i cant say that it will 100% fix every thing but its worth a shot, since your issue sounds like bandwidth allocation.

Gave it a try, no difference. How would i kn ow if it was working anyway?

The stream always starts out using all my bandwidth, which is fine, then drop to like 200kb and stays there.

Ive tried the VPN with QOS turned off before too, and that made no difference either

:-(

Did you read the install instructions carefully, there's one really easy to miss command in SSH if you actually tried to install it if you don't enter it you have to restart the installation.
It's working if in system log you sent adaptive qos modification started, changing bandwidth, if you read the instructions you would actually see the result.
If you need help with it pm me and I can team view it for you, the choice is yours.
My advice is to read it 4 times over before you go to install it, but like I said I'm willing to help.

Appreciate that.....

Below is the log output from the QOS Startup.......look right?

Jul 26 21:23:38 rc_service: httpd 469:notify_rc restart_qos;restart_firewall
Jul 26 21:23:42 miniupnpd[4805]: shutting down MiniUPnPd

Jul 26 21:23:42 miniupnpd[4998]: Listening for NAT-PMP/PCP traffic on port 5351

Yes then it will say modifying bandwidth etc, set qos to fq_codel, make sure you set per packet overhead if it applies to your connection, also which router for you have and what connection types as in dsl cable or fiber.

So its working then?

I have an ASUS RT68U with ADSL2 limited at around 4Mb......

EDIT: And downloads still show as uploads with VPN on.

Don't forget to set manual Bandwidth settings for upload/download and if you get the following lines in the log then you have the script working:

Code:
ac87: Adaptive QOS: Modification Script Started
ac87: Adaptive QOS: Changing container for Unidentified Traffic & Applying Custom Rules
ac87: Adaptive QOS: Changing minimum allocated bandwidth per QOS category to user defined percentages

If your IPTV service uses a specific port, you can categorize the whole traffic to be "Streaming". Check the script thread for more info, basically you need to edit the script, uncomment 2 lines and input the IPTV port.

For me it's only the IPTV stream that's not classified at all (doesn't show in the detailed QoS stats) but still consumes upload bandwidth from the total traffic values.

I'm not suggesting that QoS is the issue, but more that the traffic (which I believe is multicast in my case) is not being dealt with correctly internally by the router and therefore may also affect how the VPN is handling it.

If its multi.cast usually you enable igmp proxy and snooping, under ip tv, also is you qos sig the latest.
Also is which isp are you with, im qurios about your iptv, it might be like mine its a https stream i think im with optus in austrlia i have the fetch tv.

Im not sure to be honest, my issue still exists on the VPN even if i turn QOS off altogether, so im wondering its its related to QOS at all......

Im pretty sure its not ISP related, as i can easily watch youtube and do other downloads over the VPN, its just the HTTP IPTV streams.

I dont have any of the IPTV setting under LAN turned on, and the streaming works fine off the VPN.
