Hi guys,

I'm getting ready to build my NAS and would like to know what you guys think about these parts.

These are the parts I plan on using:
Case

CPU

PSU

Mobo

Harddrives and RAM I already have

I plan on using this NAS mostly for streaming with Plex to my Roku (I will need to transcode) and some web development. I want to have this on 24/7 so I want it to be power efficient, which is why I chose the 2120T over the 2120. Will the 2120T be able to handle transcoding? Is there a better CPU that is like the 2120T coming out within the next 1-2 months?

Also, this might be a stupid question, but what is the difference between a 3.5 internal slot and external slot in computer cases?

Thank you

Curious what your make vs. buy rationale was, considering the relative differences in DIY NAS software vs. that in product NASes.

Might want to look again at ASRock ITX mobos.

Transcoding on the fly while streaming out? Yikes.

From the research I've done, it seems that I can build a more powerful NAS for a lot less money. Do you think transcoding will be a problem with this build?

I looked hard at DIY. But FreeNAS and the like are just too awkward and missing features, as compared to the software in Synology and QNAP. Have you tried their on-line demos?

Transcoding on the fly.. even the mid-range i3 would probably struggle.. Can you transcode on a batch basis before viewing?

Price wise you can get the ZyXEL NSA325 if you need more features. Still I am sure the other brands have a lot to offer as well. Building File server or just building a dedicated NAS either way if you buy one built already ready to go out of the box experience might suite you better. Just had the additional HDD to it run setup program and configure away..

I agree with Steve. Expecting and i3 to transcode on the fly is iffy. Need at least an i5. Better load up on RAM, too.

You may have difficulties fitting that power supply in the case. The case lists a max power supply length of 140mm (5.51 inches). The Power supply lists a dimension of 140mm length, on the manufacturers web site, this may make it extremely difficult to get the cabling in place.
