I've set up my router with Merlin's software and have the BW logs set to save to USB stick, but it still hasn't worked. What am I doing wrong? Missed setting somewhere?

Trafic history location: Custom location
Saves every 1 hour
Save history location: /mnt/sda1/BW logs/

Am I missing anything?

Have you created BOTH data files? Does that directory exist (and with the proper case)?

Both datafiles? How do you mean? And yes, I created a BW logs folder on the stick before installing it on the router. And yes, everything was properly capitalized, hard not to do when you just click the folder you're looking for and it's exactly as you wrote it when creating the folder.

What was I missing?

There are two options on the Other Settings paged that says "Create or reset data files". Make sure you do check these options to create the new data files.

The first one is for regular traffic monitoring. There is a second one if you also use Per IP Traffic Monitoring - Create or Reset Advanced Data Files.

Yes. I have those options. i created the new files, applied, waited and then rebooted after a test download.

Still not working. I'm all back to 0GB again. Glad my BW logs really aren't important right now. I've lost them every time.

Any suggestions?

No idea what else could be wrong, sorry.

I'll go back through it later and see if I'm missing anything. For the record:

The Settings are:

Trafic history location: Custom location
Saves every 1 hour
Save history location: /mnt/sda1/BW logs/ (Where I've got the logs folder on the stick)
Create or reset data files: Yes
Enable advanced (per IP) monitoring: Yes
Create or reset advanced data files: Yes
Monitor all IPs by default: Yes

Click Apply and then reboot, right?

If I reboot the router again later, the BW logs would stay and be there when I check again, having been saved on the stick? How long does it take to restart from the stick? Is it instant?

How are you checking for your bandwidth data? What type of Internet connection do you have? Is the firewall enabled?

Is the problem with the space in the directory name "BW logs"? Have you tried naming it with an underscore character?

I use the traffic graphs in your software. They're there until I reboot, then all 0'd out again. I also have been watching what the readout on the stick as reported by your software says. Ever since I installed it, it hasn't gone down one MB at all, despite being set to record to the stick as has been seen.

I've got Comcast's 50/10 and yes. The firewall on the router is enabled.

If you need anything else, let me know. I'm all ears and will try anything I'm able.

EDIT: A few times I've loaded the webpage, I've noticed that the traffic settings were set to RAM while the page was loading, then after it loaded, it shows Custom location as set. Anything to it?

The data files are quite small - they shouldn't take many megs. A few hundred KBs at most is normal. Post their exact filesize, also whether their datestamp changes over time or not.

That's normal. The HTML code loads with default values, and the actual settings are applied once the HTML is loaded and the Javascript code gets executed.

Well, I just pulled the stick and took a look, there are 2 files that weren't in the BW logs folder when I created it. They're labeled like I'm using Tomato firmware. (These are the only 2 files in the folder. There is nothing else)

tomato_cstats_60a44c8d8710 - 13KB
tomato_rstats_60a44c8d8710 - 1KB

They're also labeled as Universal Extractor Archives. Does this matter? Am I supposed to do anything? Is your software working like it's supposed to?

If it matters I'm using one of these as a flash stick: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007JR531I/?tag=snbforums-20

It has some secure software or something on it I've not touched yet. (SanDisk Secure Access) Could this be related to my problem?

And yeah, I thought as much when I saw the page change when I loaded it completely.

Looking at the filesize, it looks like your datafile are properly created, and are also getting written to, otherwise they would be close to 0 bytes long.

Have you considered trying a different browser in case the issue is with your web browser?

Well, if my settings are ok and files are being created fine, why is everything 0ing out after reboot?

This is my reading before reboot:

4-22-2013 3.52 GB 0.09 GB 3.61 GB

Last 30 Days (4-22-2013 ~ 3-24-2013)
Reception 3.52 GB
Transmission 0.09 GB
Total 3.61 GB

Daily listing before reboot

4-22-2013 0.00 GB 0.00 GB 0.00 GB

Last 30 Days (4-22-2013 ~ 3-24-2013)
Reception 0.00 GB
Transmission 0.00 GB
Total 0.00 GB

I checked out the web interface from IE8 since that seems to work better. Firefox is my main, though.

What firmware version are you running? I'm having a similar problem where my Entware installation is not recognized after a reboot.

I am having this issue too. I am on 3.0.0.4.270.26. (Before that I was using tomato.) I have the traffic history set to save to a USB flash drive every hour. I can see that the file does get created initially and then updated every hour. However, upon reboot the traffic history is gone even though the file still exists.

I just noticed one odd thing. Upon reboot the date modified of the .gz file changes to 12/31/10 4:00 PM.

If you are trying to access the Per IP traffic history, do you have BOTH files?

The date simply shows that the file was last modified before the router could set its clock over NTP.

I am not logging the per IP traffic, only the overall traffic history. I just did a test: Before the reboot the file was 72 bytes. After the reboot it was 51 bytes.

Make sure you do check the Daily or Monthly page. Hourly traffic is not saved, because it would make the data file grow astronomically after a few months.

Do you reboot your router cleanly (with either the webui or ssh), or are you just power-cycling? Doing a power-cycle will cause issues, with unwritten data still in buffer and so on.

Are you running in router mode? Traffic monitoring is not officially supported while in AP mode.

Also check the router's logfile to see if there is any error message.

I can have yet another look at that code just in case, but so far I am unable to reproduce this issue here. My own traffic stats go all the way back to April 2012, despite many dozens of reboot during that whole year.
