New Around Here
I need to find a replacement for one of our companys servers (an old W2K server with Raid 1). Since we only use this server for file storage and sharing we don't need anything fancy (just reliable and reasonably responsive). Our basic needs are:
- Raid 1.
- BYOD (to be able to expand in the future, current needs are 1 TB).
- Able to read and write to NTFS-formatted USB disks (the writing seems to be problematic).
- Preferrably using NTFS file system (we only use Windows inhouse, so it would be convenient to be able to pop a disk into another machine in case of NAS box failure).
- No need for media servers, web access etc.

I have been reading quite a few reviews on this site, but I've not been able to find what I'm looking for (there seems to be a LOT of options and different boxes...).

So, I'd appreciate if anyone can recommend anything corresponding to the wish-list above.

Thanx in advance,

HenryG

You didn't say how many users. If 10 max, you might look at Windows Home Server based products like the LX195 and EX485/487. The drives are NTFS formatted, but instead of RAID a unique file duplication method is used.

Everything else is open-source based so use EXT3, XFS, Reiser, etc. filesystems for the internal drives. Look at this chart to see the products that write to NTFS USB drives.
