Here is my lay out:
. wifi
------------------ ---------------- /
cable modem-----| engenius router |-----------| Apple TimeCapsule |
------------------- -----------------

engenious ESR9850 WiFi is turned off. Apple TimeCapsule, Gen 1, is set to bridge mode, 802.11N (b/g compatible, measures faster than just N).
All speed tests done with speedtest.net.

Hooking MBP laptop directly to cable modem I get a download speed of ~60 MBPS
" hardwire to engenius router I get a download speed of ~40MBPS
" hardwire to Time Capsule I get a download speed of ~40MBPS
" WiFi to Time Capsule I get a download speed of ~30MBPS

Replacing engenius ESR9850 with Dlink DIR-655:
Hooking MBP laptop hardwire to Dlink router I get a download speed of ~60MBPS
" WiFi to Time Capsule I get a download speed of ~20MBPS

So is there a good way to optimize the lan settings of the engenious router (or MBP and time capsule) to get the 60 MBPS on its hardware ports?

What about the Dlink to TimeCapsule connection?

The best optimization is to replace your router with a good one from Asus - any (cheap) Asus will do a much better job! But you should go for a router >100 USD to get an actual one and to be future save!

See my footer for the suggested models - and the setup to cover a bigger home with great firmware that has a focus on performance and security!

Quite untrue, apple wifi routers have been known to perform well and apple is usually late to the game in the most recent technology but they sort out the bugs first. They do have wifi routers with AC wifi.

You can optimise LAN but in your case there is no point. If you need a faster router to handle faster WANs, get something with a faster CPU. Avoid dlink and you will be fine.

While ASUS router would do well it is not the only choice, it mainly depends on what you want from a router.
