New Around Here
Hello,

I am running the 3.0.0.4.374.32 Merlin build on an RT-N66u. If I try to upgrade it to the newest merlin build or even back to stock firmware it will not work. It goes through the cycle and appears to be upgrading but when it resets I am still on .32. I have tried doing a factory reset and then upgrading but that does not help. Thanks for your responses.

Make sure you have the FW for the correct router model, and that you unzipped it first. Unplug any plugged USB disk then reboot, to ensure there's no service such as DLNA or Download Master using up memory. Try again flashing then.

If it still fails, try using the Firmware Recovery Tool from Asus.

Same situation here, FIXED!

Hi.

One of my two RT-AC66U was also stuck on a previous FW version (3.0.0.4.354.29 Merlin build), and I could not get it to take anything else - tried both the latest Merlin and Asus builds.

It completed the download and the upgrade bar reached 100%, then it just fell back to the GUI instead of asking to reset the device. Nevertheless after rebooting it, the old FW was still there.

I used the same firmware file on my two devices, one worked right away and the other didn't, even after a Factory Default reset and entering Recovery.

Only thing that worked was entering recovery AND using Asus' Firmware Restoration Utility. That got the new image loaded successfully!

Maybe after upgrading to the latest firmware you should upgrade your current firmware once more to check if it can upgrade itself on your router this time. The problem, however, is to detect if the upgrade has been actually done when you use the same firmware.
