Can not log on to router admin account

I am running Merlin's 376.48 Beta 3 release on an RT-N66U. It has been working fine and I was able to log onto the router without a problem. Now I can not
log on. IE says it is not accepting the connection. FF says unable to connect. I have tried Telnet and connection is refused. I do not have wireless enabled. I have no USB devices
attached to the router.

I downloaded the Asus discovery program. It finds the router (192.168.11.1) [yes it is configured to .11.1] but can not access it to configure.

I have tried disabling all of my protection software. I have rebooted the router. I am concerned that malware may have taken over the
router. I have little expertise in this sort of thing.

I have been trying to find info on reset, but the terms needed to find things essentially selects every thread. My gut feeling here is that I need to reset the modem to an earlier state. I have found no mention of a way to save settings with the router in this state. The only one I have see mentioned is for a reset to the manufacturers default. I have not found a way to reload it with either the same firmware of the previous version.

My router is one of the early units and did not recognize the full memory space. I think I did something to fix that when I started suing Merlin's work; but I don't remember how or what. I am not sure how to handle that memory address space problem if I restore to factory default.

I could really use some advice here.

Turn off your router. Unplug it for a good 5 to 10 minutes from the power source.

Disconnect every other network device (wired or wireless) from your network.

With the computer you will connect to the router with, reboot it and make sure to clean the browser cache.

Now, turn on your router. Wait for 5 minutes to allow it to fully boot up.

On the single computer that you will use to connect to the router, see if you can.

If the above doesn't work; turn off the router. Hold down the reset button while turning the power button on for about 30 seconds.

Wait for the router to boot up and try to connect to it with a wired connection (everything will be at factory defaults with the same firmware version as was last installed).

With it functional again, recommend to update to RMerlin's 376.49 firmware version.

Clear/delete the cache on your browser, or better yet, use Chrome to try to access the GUI.

You say you've tried to reach the GUI by inputting "192.168.11.1" (since that's what the ASUS discovery tool shows it to be)? Try again, but with your browser's cache cleared or give Chrome a try.

Can you ping the router? What happens if you ping 102.168.11.1?

You might also try to see whether the IP address the ASUS tool is returning is an error. In Windows click on "Network Sharing Center", and then click on the link for the currently active "Connection" and that will give you a page showing the connection's basic info, but not the info you're seeking, so click on "Details" and look for the IP address of the Gateway and the IPv4 Server (they should be the same); verify that they are "192.168.1.1" in which case, use that IP address to access the GUI, or if it isn't, use whatever address the Server/Gateway are reported to be.

Also, all of the suggestions that L&LD offered are excellent, and you should try those as well.

If all that fails, just hit the reset button to restore your router to factory settings, which should reset the GUI to 192.168.1.1. You'll have to re-input all your settings, but at least you'll be good to go.

I have spent about 8 hours trying to fix this today.

Resetting (and all the other suggestions) yielded no communication with the router for admin.

I got to the point (after reset) where no devices (including admin) were able to use the router. At some point a setup screen for the router appeared, but it was non-functional.

I removed the router and I went through my primary PCs settings to change from a fixed address to DHCP to directly connect to the ISP. That is how I am posting this. However, my phones and other devices are not available because the router is out of the path.

Reset brought the address of the router back to factory settings. But nothing worked. I could not log on. Everything was now exposing fixed addresses so none of those things worked either. Although I am not sure how that was actually affecting things. After setting my PC to DHCP; still no connection.

Any further suggestions? My wife is seriously upset by the lack of telephones.

Got it.

Now a really dumb question. I have just installed the Merlin 49. It wants a manual reboot. After the last couple of days I am very paranoid.

How to reboot?

Reset button or just power off and on.

Would you believe this is not mentioned in the manual.

Never mind. Everything seems to be working.

Manual reboot is to pull the power plug from the router (or use the switch if it has one).

Even with everything seemingly working; do a reboot. ;)
