Can the AC88U work behind another router with merlinwrt?

My problem is this:

Since the AC88U does not have a dsl modem integrated, I need an external modem. Those are very hard to find here and usually pretty expensive, so I thought about just putting another router (which has the modem integrated) in front of my AC88U. That other router does have a nat firewall though, which can't be disabled. The router (Fritzbox) also does not have some kind of bridge mode, that would allow me to use the modem functionality all by itself.

So the question is: Will there be any problems or does the AC88U (merlinwrt installed) handle that situation just fine?

Yes you can operate in a double NAT setup. You can get most everything most people use a router to work perfectly. Port forward if needed require forwarding on both routers. One feature that some people want to use that won't work is running a VPN server on the 88. Running VPN clients will work fine.

Or you could put the AC88U in access point mode to avoid a double NAT setup. You loose some of the AC88U's functionally associated with the WAN interface (i.e. firewall, QoS, etc.) but that might not be important to you.

I run a similar setup.
isp router in front of the ac88u.

I can turn nat off though on the isp router.
But i didnt initially.
I ran dmz to the second router and ran dchp on a different subnet.

dchp on main router...192.168.0.2-6
dchp on ac88u 92.168.1.2-201

gave the ac88u and address of 192.168.0.6 in the isp router and in the ac88u settings.
i run nat from the ac88u.

hope this helps.

In all the double NAT setups I have run I have never put the second router in the DMZ. Everything with a few exceptions such as VPN server has worked fine.

Many router modems can be put into bridge mode and the WIFI turned off. This gives you just a modem that you can connect the Asus to. This is what I do with my PK5001Z modem router. A web search on your modem router should show you how to do it.

He's already said that's not possible in post #1.

What kind connection is it adsl or vdsl2 or cable. I might be able to suggest a unit,
Adsl you can use a tp-link td-8817 I had one, it was cheap as chips here in Australia AUD $25. Vdsl2/adsl 2 dreytek Vigor 130 generally over AUD $100 not too expensive.
