Can torrents choke a switch?

I have two PCs connected to a switch, which is again connected to an Asus RT-AC68U (about to be replaced) in the attic running Merlin. My son was gaming on one pc, when I started downloading a torrent on the other. This resulted in his ping rising from 20 to about 500. This never happens if I download a torrent wirelessly from my laptop. We have a nice 300/300 fiber connection. Could this ping spike be caused by the switch not being able to prioritize his traffic? I have this unmanaged switch: https://www.dlink.com/dk/da/products/dgs-105-5-port-gigabit-ethernet-switch - is it a POS? I always thought that a switch was unnoticeable - it just works, but maybe I'm wrong? Any input appreciated.

Not the switch but the router QOS not working for wired connections.

May be something you can't fix. Flex QOS or Cake QOS may help. But...
