Please forgive me if this has been beat to death before. I’ve searched the SNB forums about adding and/or changing client icons used for the Clients Status page and found some good information but many of the threads dead-end before getting to the details I’m looking for.

We’re running the latest ASUS firmware 3.0.0.4.380.4164 on our RT-AC68U. Already know how to change icons for the clients using the “built-in” icons. Not sure about adding icons using the big “+” on the drop down icon menu. I assume you simply point to the location on your computer where the icon is that you want to use (since Windows opens a standard explorer window) and the icon gets uploaded to someplace in the router?

Does anyone know the icon size requirements? Have downloaded several great icons others have shared specifically for the ASUS router but the icon size seems to vary widely (Ex: 128x128 up to 250x250 pixels). Does the router resize them when uploaded? Do icons need to be PNG or JPEG or some other format? How do you delete an icon you’ve uploaded (Factory Reset)?

There is one another thing that puzzles me. I changed an icon from the default; in this case it’s the one that looks like a generic PC. Any idea how to get back to the default generic PC icon? Pressing the default under the icon does nothing and the generic PC icon is not shown in the icon menu.

I know these are probably some basic questions for the senior people in this forum. I’m just dipping my toe in the router admin arena and am enjoying the nice little touches like using different icons for different devices. This sure makes reviewing the Client Status quicker. None of this is critical for router operation….just fun to play with while satisfying my OCD tendencies. Thanks!

Sorry , but do you Press "apply after" and refresh(F5) the page?

Read your post and just went back and tested. As soon as I hit Default the icon changed back. Could have sworn it didn't do that earlier today. Understand about the need to Apply and refresh so browser cached data does not give false information. Must have been cockpit error :)

Still have not figured out how to get the generic PC icon when it's not in the menu and it's not the default icon. Oh well, that and other questions still stand.

Thanks for your response.

See that there have been several lookers but few answers to some of the client icon questions. Yes, I know the client icons are little more than “eye candy” and don’t really impact router administration, but I did some limited testing just to satisfy my curiosity anyway. Here are the results –

Icon Size - used 128x128 pixels (transparent background) and they look great

Format – used png format because size was typically 5-10K and it supports transparent backgrounds

Icons do restore back to default using the Default selection under the icon. So if you don’t like the icon you uploaded you can go back to default (or any other icon you want).

No noticeable change in memory used on status page. Don’t know if memory usage would show there anyway since I don’t know what happens to the icon file. Was hoping someone with more knowledge than me could answer that.

Rebooted router and the icons that were uploaded stayed, which I expected. I did not do a firmware update or Factory Reset. Not sure if that would wipe out the uploaded icons since they are not part of a factory firmware package. Then again, they might stay since it looks like the icon files are placed in non-volatile memory just like router settings.

Thought I'd share this to maybe fill in a few blanks for those who have the same questions I had about client icons. None of this is of the technical nature normally covered in this forum, but must admit that the custom icons sure make finding clients in the router admin pages easier!
