Client List in AP mode?

I have two N66U's running RMerlin 270.26b. One is in "router mode", acting as the home's router and primary wireless access point. The second is in "AP mode", and simply provides extended wireless client coverage at the other end of the house. Wired topology looks like this:

Modem--N66U(Router)--Switch--N66U(AP)

The cat6 from the Switch connects to the N66U(AP)'s WAN port. Nothing is connected to the N66U(AP)'s LAN ports (it has wireless clients only).

Problem: The AP's Client List displays every device on the entire LAN, including all the devices on the "WAN" side of the AP.

Is there any way to get the Client List on the N66U(in AP mode) to only show "downstream" devices (i.e., display devices attached via its LAN ports and Radios, but not display devices on the WAN port side of the AP?)

Hi,

Looks like this is a general issue: Same behaivor with the new version 3.0.0.4.354 on my N-RT16 - coming directly from Asus.

Maybe Merlin can have a look into it...

With kind regards
Joe

Thanks, Joe. It *acts* as if AP mode just bridges the WAN and LAN sides together. If so, then the Client List code may have no way to tell whether a particular MAC exists on the LAN or WAN side of the AP -- thus it may not be easy to fix.

I'm sure Eric will know, if he has time to look at it. But I also suspect the .354 stuff is a higher priority right now!

Dredging up an old thread - this problem persists

So I hate to bring up a year old thread, but I wanted to contribute that this still is an issue, on newer hardware with newer firmware.

And to see if anyone has any new thoughts or fixes.

Similar to the OPs setup, I have:

Modem->AC87U (wireless router mode)----wired port---> AC66U (AP mode)

when accessing the AC87U router admin page, Clients are listed as 0 (zero/none)

When accessing the AC66U in AP mode page-
ALL the clients, whether they are directly wired or wirelessly connected to the 87 OR the 66, show up in the AC66U's client list.

It seems like the router admin page should be the one that lists these as that's where I'm going to manage clients, change static IPs, etc.

Yes, the wireless segments share the same SSIDs, passwords, etc. the AP is assigned to X.X.1.2 and the router X.X.1.1; DHCP only on the router with range X.X.1.100-254

Even the clients I have assigned a static IP through the AC87U (router) don't show up there but do in the AC66U (AP).

All hardware has latest available public firmware and the problem has existed through any combination of available firmware upgrades.

Seeing that this has existed across multiple Asus routers, maybe this is a deep seated basic firmware framework issue.

Anyone have any ideas? (Couldn't find any other threads addressing this specific issue)

Do you have the cable plugged into the LAN port or the WAN port on the AP? Usually, on an AP that's sharing the same subnet, you'll see everything on the network. This is because the two devices allow clients to communicate with each other. If you changed the IP address on the AP to 2.1 from 1.2, it would separate the two and clients connected to each one wouldn't be able to see each other.

My setup is similar; modem -> pfSense router -> RT-N66U in AP mode. The router is the gateway, DHCP, DNS, NAT, and NTP server. All clients connect through the AP, wired and wireless. Both the router and AP show all clients. My AP only shows client MAC and IP addresses, while the router is aware of client MAC, IP, and hostnames.

Considering that the router is running the DHCP server and acting as your gateway, it should be in control of IP allocation so I am confused as you why the AP is the only one showing clients.

Exactly what problems are you experiencing with your setup?
What are you trying to accomplish that you can't?
