Confused on Adapative QoS Bandwidth Setting, option for Automatic Setting?

Hello there!

I've recently updated my internet to 1gbps fiber and took the liberty to update my firmware as well on my Asus RT-ax86u. Oh btw I also use FlexQoS script on my router as well!

While updating my QoS settings, I noticed a few things had changed from my previous settings. Previously, I had the Bandwidth Setting set to manual to about 80% of my total internet download/upload speed. Now I see there is an option for Automatic Setting for the Bandwidth Setting? I don't recall this being there before. I'm confused as to what I should be doing here. Should I be using this option instead of manually putting my download/upload caps? I've been reading conflicting information in regard to this, including putting it at 95% or even 90% of the total speed. One thread I read said to do around 10-20% of your total cap. Some say you should do this because of buffer bloat and or latency issues. I have it set to automatic right now and I haven't seen any issues (well not yet) so not sure what I should do?

A few threads mentioned CakeQoS and conflicts with this option as it should be set to a ratio (https://www.snbforums.com/threads/cakeqos-merlin-v2-1-1.74309/page-16#post-920251). However, I don't think I'm using CakeQoS as I mentioned before I have FlexQoS installed and I'm pretty sure it's set to fq_codel. The gaming profile seems to select the Automatic Setting by default as well. I mean everything seems to be working okay from what I've seen but I haven't done any intensive tests yet.

Should I really set this to Manual? Please let me know as I would like to optimize this and make sure it's set properly. If I shouldn't be using the Automatic Setting, then why is this even an option on the screen? What exactly is this Automatic Setting doing anyways that is different from Manually setting it?

Automatic Setting has been there for a long time. It essentially makes QoS use a traffic limit of 1895 Mbps in each direction to really avoid any traffic shaping at all. Not sure how it can be useful that way.

Should I be setting a Manual option for this then instead of using Automatic? I didn't realize the option has been there for a long time, perhaps I didn't notice it or have forgotten. Obviously the 1895 Mbps amount exceeds my 1Gbps limit. Not sure what I should be doing here.

With 1 gbps fiber, what problem are you trying to solve by using QoS? Seems people around these parts typically indicate QoS may not be needed when running faster ISP speeds like 1 gbps fiber. Some past discussions on QoS and fiber.

There is a lot of activity in the house including streaming, downloading, gaming and occasionally torrenting. So in the past I've always used QoS (as a force of habit and necessity). Are you saying that I don't need QoS anymore and I should just turn it off? Otherwise, if I don't turn it off and keep it on, should I instead use the Manual Setting for the Bandwidth instead of the Automatic Setting?

I look at the link you provided and see several threads. A general review seems to be that folks think that using QoS on a 1gbps fiber is not necessary. I've always used QoS so this is new to me. I'll have to review a few more threads.

With those speeds ...try running it without QoS for a few days and see if you notice any issues. After you can try it with QoS and set up manually (it's recommended) instead anywhere from 85-95% of your allocated bandwidth.
