Can 2 RT-AC87R units be connected wirelessly with one acting as a repeater? If not, what options do I have to extend the base AC87R router to another floor wirelessly?

Thanks,
Brian

RT-AC87R as a repeater

Yes they can. You would just need to set one as the repeater in the software and have it connect to the main router. Asus has made this pretty easy. IYou will get better performance if you could set one router up as media bridge or access point. Hopefully you will have better luck with the 87Rs than I did but my problems were just related to variations in the 5Ghz channel.

Here is a video. Around 5 minutes in he discusses setting the router mode.

I just looked at my admin panel. The 87R is different. It only has 3 modes. The AP mode is for a WIRED connection. It says the Media Bridge mode is for wireless but if you use that mode you cannot have wireless devices connect to it. It does not have a wireless repeater mode.

Sorry I thought it did although I never tried to use it and have returned my 87r for the reasons I mentioned. The review at small net builder in fact mentions the repeating mode.

But when I looked up the manual it did in fact only mention the media bridge and access point modes not the repeater mode. You can look in Wireless/Bridge or WDS and you may be able to set it up as a repeater there

Yes, it's disappointing to find this out after buying an RT-AC87U, to be sure, as it's avaialable in other models firmware.

Unfortunately the WDS mode is pretty much unusable becuase it allows only open or WEP security mode.

Not good enough IMHO, repeater mode is actually really important to me.
I'm hoping to see a functioning DD-WRT for it some time soon.
