New Around Here
Hello, I have a D-link DIR 655 router that can support an external hard disk through a USB port.

Currently, I have a 2 TB WD Elements connected to the desktop. My desptop and 2 laptops are connected to the router wirelessly and are part of a homegroup. I store all documents and relevant files on the 2 TB disk and not on the individual device hard disks.

My qtn is: Is there an advantage to connecting this common storage 2 TB hard disk to the router rather than desktop?

ps: The desktop is on 24X7, so access to the hard disk is never a problem.

They all use SMB with embedded Linux. With FAT disks, it's slow. With NTFS disks, it's slower yet.

Best way to have a shared LAN disk is as a share on a windows PC that's ON whenever needed. And backup that too.

Or a costly real NAS.
