My backup RT-AC68R wouldn't boot up after a month or two sitting on the shelf, and I wound up going into Rescue Mode and re-installing the firmware. It appears to have been successful (after a few tries) and now comes up with the GUI login screen. But the default username and password don't work. admin/admin is what the ASUS user's manual says, and what I've always used... I tried both latest RMerlin and ASUS stock firmware, same thing. Anyone have an idea what's up? Hate to trash it for want of a password... Thanks!

last User/PW could work

or make a factory reset, press WPS while power on and 20s longer, wait 5 min and press reset button 10s.
then try again admin/admin

There is no default password anymore (maybe there was a long time ago). When you do a factory default reset it forces you to set a password as part of the setup process. If you haven't reset the settings then the user/password will be the same as before.

My old username/password worked. Seems strange to me after a "factory reset", but whatever... Thank you!

Glad to hear you got it working.

In your post you only said you reinstalled the firmware (which keeps all your settings). That's not the same as a factory reset.

Based on reading the ASUS manual... My understanding is that a Factory reset is what you get if you press the reset button. To get my unresponsive unit alive again I went into Rescue Mode, which involves holding the reset button while powering the unit on, and I then re-loaded firmware. I assumed you've done a factory reset in that process, though I suppose I didn't explicitly?? (Thanks!)

They are actually different things. Although it's not unreasonable to assume that the process of going into recovery mode might also clear NVRAM (aka a factory reset), that's not the case. The fact that both things make use of the reset button (albeit in different ways) doesn't help.

I suppose an analogy of recovery mode would be booting up your PC from a Windows install CD and reinstalling the OS over the top of your current installation. You fix your Windows OS but all your old documents are still there unchanged.
