Did I damage the LAN socket or the Switch?

I inadvertently plugged my Tone Problem Tester into a PoE-enabled socket.

All LED lights went out on it. Then smell of smoke...gr8!

Ok I can live with a $60 dollar piece of kit being broken but here is the annoying part.

Setup: The switch downstairs is a Ubiquiti Tough PoE Switch connected to a USG controller.

Problem: All APs can be detected by the controller except the one connected to this LAN socket. The AP powers up fine and its LED shows same lighting as other working APs on the network. When I connect my laptop to the LAN socket (no, that did not blow up...) I can see ping the controller fine / see DHCP server etc.

When I login into the Tough Switch it does not detect there is an AP attached.

How do I definitively check if there is a problem with this socket or what damage might Tone Probe smoke-out caused?

Yeah, you probably popped the port on the switch...

Magic Smoke is fun ;)

Ok thanks sfx2000

:) Many people believe working in IT is all about code, apps and drinking endless cups of java...the never get to see this side...chaotic comms cabinets and smoke...

Anyway what is a popped switch port? Could it be the LAN point itself?

Just in case it only triggered a security mechanism, try pulling the power off the switch for 10-15 secs, then plug it back in.

Thanks tried but still the same.

Can a single port in a switch be damaged?

If I understand your description correctly only one of the POE ports on your Ubiquiti is damaged. Have you tried plugging the device into one of the other ports to see if it is detectable there? Also from your description, it sounds like the "damaged" port is actually still working as a normal "non-POE" port. So maybe you just burnt out some current limiting component (a fuse link) on that individual port.

Sounds like you may have lost the PoE power, but the port itself is still sounds like it's ok.

Some have poly fuses, which if left unpowered for a day or so may self-heal, not sure about this particular switch however.

its a Ubiquiti PoE ToughSwitch...I'm not so sure about the tough part though :)

Colin, no not yet! not at that particular site. There 8 ports. 8 are in use but the site needs only 4! So there are 4 switch ports taken up going to LAN ports not in use. Did not have time to plug them out. Needless to say not labelled anywhere on switch.

What ethernet tone tester, and how were you using it - even on a hot POE port, it shouldn't have caused a problem in the first place...

In any event - I would contact their customer support -- support@ubnt.com

or check their support forum, they're pretty good at turnaround...

Ok thanks...

No Pots line

However, there is label on two patch panel ports referencing "active uplink ports" - what are they?
