New Around Here
Hi everyone,

Trying to decide between these two "smart" switches for a budget setup (yes I know they are far from cisco or procurves:( ) I can pick either up new for about $170.

Was hoping somebody has had experience with either smart line and could lend some pros/cons.

Hands-on wise, I can't find much of anything on the Dlink(believe it might be a newer player) and for the Netgear, mostly people complaining about the fan, which I believe has been removed on the newest revision.

Anything to avoid like the plague? Missing features? Reliability?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

I have some netgear GS 8 port lightly managed switches. Smaller than what you want? Fanless. Work well.
Management requires their s/w rather than a web browser - keeps cost down I suppose.

Opinion: D-link-not.

Thanks for the reply stevech,

Yeah, the 24 ports are a must as it's going to be replacing a well used 16 port dumb switch.

I started off looked at some of the smaller switches but decided a single large switch will be best.

Right now I'm leaning towards the netgear, but still looking.

Dell sells some good ones.

the ones with a web server for web browser admin are nice but cost more. (anything to avoid cryptic command line languages!)

I'll look into the Dells, though considering budget, the lifetime warranties of Dlink and netgear are one of the deciding features for me.

Are your GS switches "green"? Any comment?

I've never used any "green" net equipment, so not sure if its a good or bad thing. Dlink sure seems to be proud of it.

I've had both switches, and promptly (within a week) returned them both, and did what I should have done from the beginning: I bought a 200-series switch from Cisco.

The D-Link would not accept any changes in the switch config screen, and therefore was nothing but a dumb switch.

The Netgear switch (I love Netgear, so I was sad at this) didn't use the same kind of terminology or standards as Cisco and the other players. I also tried to do a search for examples online of how to configure them, and received very little back (less than a full page from Google).

Being a beginner, and wanting to learn my way and have examples, I bought the Cisco. It worked exactly like it should have, and I had TONS of examples from Google to do anything and everything.

It may be twice as much, but the effort and frustration level was well less than half as much. Worth it in my opinion.

I had a netgear and found it unreliable. I bought a Dlink and I love it. However, I now think one of my problems with the netgear was the default boot behavior. (Same behavior for the Dlink). If they get IP assigned over DHCP, and DHCP is not there when they boot, they will simply revert to factory default IP. Which may not be at all reachable on your network.

I think the dlink interface is cleaner but my dlink is a few years newer than the Netgear. I love my Dlink and my next switch purchase will likely be another.
