I've got a weird DNS issue with my Samsung Galaxy S24+ phone. I realize this is on the one hand probably not the best forum for this, but after spending several days trouble shooting this problem - it seems specific to my AX5700 Pro router with Merline 3004.388.8_2. Let me summarize as succinctly as I can.
1) Except for the problem I'm about to describe, phone works perfectly with this router. And this problem did not begin till Oct 10. No firmware updates of any sort applied to phone nor router recently.
2) On Android, to update an existing app or download a new app, one goes to the Google Play Store. This part still works fine
3) Play store gives you a list of apps that have newer versions available. This works fine.
4) One would then click on update, and each app in sequence would be updated - download the updated version, over write the old version. This is what is not working. I cons showing download progress would just spin.
a) Long story short - first discovery I made, is that this did work if I disconnected entirely from the router and just used cellular
b) I went to a friends house with a different (TPLink) router, and it worked fine
c) Scratching my head, while connected to ASUS router, I activated my VPN (Private Internet Access - PIA) on my phone and now it did work fine. Very wierd I thought. But I am on a different network.
d) In investigating settings for my VPN, I see that by default, when activated, PIA uses it's own DNS. For S&G, I told PIA to use default router of phone, and problem returned. AHA - I have a DNS issue.I think
5) Checked router settings for DNS, and I am using Cloudfare with DOT enabled. The phone just goes to router for DNS, so it's using Cloudfare with DOT.
a) So on Router, I first turned off DOT. Still have problem
b) On Router, I then changed Cloudfare to Google, then OpenDNS. Phone still has the problem
c) Turned on DNS Director and specifically directed the Phone to OpenDNS. Still have the the problem
So at this point, all I can say with some measure of certainty is I can not do app updates on my phone in the normal way unless I connect to another router or just to cellular or to my VPN using its own DNS. I have told my tale of woe to an Android specific group. They are also stumped, and blame the router
Very weird
