DNS servers in LAN and WAN settings

Hello, SNB! Am I understanding this right?

If I add DNS servers to the LAN > DHCP Server > DNS and WINS Server Setting fields it will pass those DNS servers just to my DHCP auto IP and DHCP manually assigned IP clients and static clients will abide by the WAN DNS settings?

If I add DNS servers to WAN > Internet Connection > WAN DNS Setting all clients will use these DNS servers instead of my ISP's, so static IP, DHCP auto IP and DHCP manually assigned IP clients, unless DHCP DNS has been specified for those devices?

In essence they are the same question, but it's been a long day and I'm struggling to think straight tonight, so covering both bases.

Explain exactly what you mean by "DHCP manually assigned IP clients" and "static clients".

Maybe it's best if you get some sleep and think about this again tomorrow. ;)

I'm thinking of DHCP clients where you've reserved the IP address in the router settings and static IP clients where you've set it in the client.

Why is it when I search for specific topics like this, I can never find them!

1. Sod's Law
2. Because you haven't followed Colin's advice in post #2.
3. The longer you follow the forum the more you remember topics that popped up and which experts replied, and then, by using the forum's advanced search features and searching for the keywords but also filtering by the expert's name, you can often retrieve the topic. And sometimes it pays to search on Google rather than the forum, but limiting results to the forum.
4. And, more often than not, you need a bit of luck.

And looking at Members Online Now, I see you still haven't followed Colin's advice :)

OK Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't being awkward, it's just that a lot of people here use the term "static" incorrectly (when they really mean DHCP reservation).

In my experience, if someone has configured a client NIC with a static IP address they are also setting the other values (like netmask, gateway and DNS server address) as well. In which case they won't be using the routers DHCP to tell them which DNS server to use.
