Hi all,
New to the forum and fairly new to the NAS world so please be gentle!
Current set up
D-Link DNS323
2x2TB WD green drives
RAID 1 2TB capacity pretty much full
Proposed set up
Synology DS414 - SHR
2x2TB (from above)
1x3TB (new - probably WD green)
1x3TB (Future)
So I have a few questions:
Im looking to reuse the 2 x2 TB's from the drink in the new Synology, I probably have about 1 TB in spare storage drives lying around but not enough to cover the entire 2 TB. My thoughts were to break the RAID1 in the Dlink, add 1 of the 2 2TB's into the Synology and copy over the data, then add the second 2TB once copied and then the 3TB (as i understand you have to add smallest drives first), from what I can tell this won't work as I need to set the new volume up with all the 3 drives. Is this correct?
If so any suggestions on how to do this? Also how long will it take to copy over the 2TB of Data (assuming USB or Ethernet)?
I want to use the new Synology for storage as well as time machine backup (around 2TB total for TM backups), is there anything specific I should do to allow for this?
I plan on adding a second 3TB in the future, if I do this, is it just a case of adding it to the array? I won't have the capability to back up the 4TB at that point i need to add the new drive so I'm hoping its a case of just adding it and it will build the new volume around the existing 4TB main, 2TB backup and 1TB unused to allow for 7TB main and 3TB backup?
If I add an external Hard drive to the USB port will this be able to be seen on the network as a new drive on its own or will the Synology view it as part of the existing set up and try and build it into the array?
Im fairly set on the DS414 but was originally looking at the DS413j, how much of a difference is there between the 2, I'm fairly new to this all and until now the DNS323 has fit my needs perfectly, the size has now let me down but I don't ask much of the NAS.
Thanks for reading, apologies if I have asked dumb questions, have a happy new year!
