Does guest network consume bandwidth / throughput ?

Hello,

Was just wondering if having 2 guest networks constantly running but rarely used would consume much throughput / bandwidth etc. I guess it must consume some, even if not in use?

Thoughts?

Are you referring to the SSIDs for the wireless? They are transmitting all the time? If you are meaning internet bandwidth then they only consume bandwidth when you have actual users.

I mean is the fact that the guest network is running and transmitting causing more strain on the router, be it cpu, memory, bandwidth, would any performance increase in turning it off be so negligible it really is not worth doing ? I guess if it's transmitting more "networks" (I have 2 guest networks running) then it has to have some effect on throughput etc.

Yes is the simple answer...

The second SSID does take up a bit of overhead (more SSID's, more overhead), and any traffic on the Guest SSID is sharing bandwidth with the primary SSID...

If you don't need a Guest SSID, then don't enable it.

Thanks both, Perfect.
