Asus router came with 192.168.50.1. I'm used to the old Linksys gateway of 192.168.1.1. I changed the Asus gateway to 192.168.0.1, since that's what I thought the majority of home routers/networks were. I understand it's all a local network either way, but was wonder if I was missing anything that I should know about.

The subnet can be more or less anything, within reason. That being that it has to be one of the address ranges reserved for private use. So it could be 192.168.0.0/24, or 192.168.1.0/24, or 192.168.50.0/24, 10.0.1.0/22, etc.

Within the subnet you decide to use the gateway address can be any of the available host addresses. So if your subnet was 192.168.0.0/24 your gateway's address could be anything from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254 (but it can't be .0 or .255).

So the short answer is, it doesn't really matter. I'm guessing that Asus changed to using 192.168.50.0/24 to avoid conflicting with other equipment that often use 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24.
