Downloading files with ASUS RT-AC66U as SFTP client?

vikaesar

New Around Here
Hi,

I've got the ASUS RT-AC66U router with the latest official firmware installed (FW v3.0.0.4.374_5517).

My problem is that I want to PC-less download some files to an external drive attached to one of the router's USB ports by using the ASUS Download Master functionality, but it doesn't work for encrypted connections, specifically for SFTP downloads.

Is there a way to download files from an SFTP server with the router stock firmware accessing and using the router CLI as a Unix system or should I install a custom firmware to do so?

See if maybe an sftp server could be installed using Optware.

Otherwise, you can switch to Asuswrt-Merlin or Tomato, enable SSH, and use SCP (which would be just as secure).

Could an SFTP server work as an SFTP client, which is what I'm looking for?

By the way, if there is a way to use rsync through SSH to get the files instead of an SFTP client it will do just as much, as the file server supports it too.

No idea, I never looked into SFTP.

No idea, I only use rsync over a LAN.

I've found a package in the repository known as Optware that will do, but it is an HTTPS client instead. The package is wget-ssl and is listed here.

I'm just new to this stuff about custom firmwares for routers. Could someone please tell me where to start so I can get Optware installed on my RT-AC66U?

Well, for anyone interested, installing Optware solved my problem, as it includes libcurl package:

Curl is a command line tool for transferring files with URL syntax, supporting FTP, FTPS, HTTP, HTTPS, GOPHER, TELNET, DICT, FI.

PS: I couldn't find any SFTP client in the Optware repository, but FTPS and HTTPS are good enough for me.

FTPS and/or HTTPS on Asus RT-AC66U

vikaesar,

Can you give a newbie some help in getting this setup on Asus RT-AC66U router?

I really do not understand how ASUS and other vendors think allowing FTP access from the Internet, is secure.

Any further direction would be helpful.

Thanks,
