Dry run with AC66U

Hooked up RT-AC66U to Laptop with Cat5 cable (_NOT_ on home network, _not_ attached to Cable Modem). Loaded driver for AC USB3 antenna/WAN card. Loaded utilities for RT-AC66U router.
Trying this cause I wanted to see if the NTFS 1/2 gig HD and the 128 Mb memory stick was accessible over the network. Never got that far. Thanksgiving dinner and company arrived first.
Then (here comes the kicker) when we looked at the TV there was a window floating on a grey screen with this message "Not Support". Huh? Don't know where _that_ came from!
I shut down the Laptop, shut down the router (never started the HD) and cycled the Cable Box/TV/Soundbar off and on again.
TV picture came back again.
Odd thing to happen.
ASUS Router was powered ON but not hard wired to the network so why would it's wireless function interfere with the TV functioning?
I'm hoping it was just a co-incidence!

You say you were running the AC66 but it wasn't connected to your ISP via a cable modem, only to your laptop so you could do a "dry run" (and by that I take it you mean so you could play with the GUI settings). Did you turn off the AC66's radios, or was it broadcasting?

If the radios were on and broadcating, is your TV a Smart TV with a wireless adapter built in? That might explain why it picked up an "error" page from the router (although I have no real idea how that could actually occur).

And, if the radios were on, but you don't have a TV with wireless, do you use ATT U-verse? ATT's U-verse is known to sometimes interact in strange ways with the 5ghz band? Maybe it picked up something from the router?

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.

My suggestion to you is to just connect the AC66U to your modem, and get it up and running. No need to do "dry runs." It will function just fine if you set it up properly, and I guarantee you will enjoy it.

Jegesq - yes, TV is a Vizio "Smart" unit with wireless built in. TV is maybe 5' away from our LinkSys router and I haven't seen them interact, yet.
Was hoping to run through the set up and access HD and thumb drive(s) attached to router.
No harm I think, but a curious thing. Reported it in the hope someone else had seen the same and knew just what was going on.
