New Around Here
Hi All,
I'm a nooby here with my first NAS and after receiving my DS213+ I followed all the instructions and successfully installed the hardware and DSM (ver 4.2-3202).
I've also managed to move over about 12Gb of my photos and Photo Station works fine.
My only problem is File Station. Whenever I try to open it all I get is the revolving "donut" and it fails to open. I have never been able to open it and I also can't stop the revolving "donut".
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Brian

Other than File Station - works OK?

Photo Station (and the like on anyone's NAS) is infamous for bogging down the CPU computing thumbnail images upon initial load of many pix.
There's a PC app from Synology to do this, and not loading the NAS' CPU for this one-time thing. If the NAS CPU is grinding on this, you'd see a constant high CPU usage.

Otherwise, for File Station - I dunno. Any external media it gets stuck on trying to mount/validate? SD card? USB flash drive? eSATA, USB3?. Internal disk not formatted?
Do shares work OK from a PC on the LAN?

Hi stevech,
Thanks for the quick response.

Yes the processor is being bogged down by the thumbnail creation but I paused this process when trying to open File Station and it made no difference.

All other processes/packages, e.g. photo station, video station, shares etc. work fine.

However, when I attached an external hard drive to one of the rear usb3 ports the copy button on the front of the unit did not light up, but I could see the drive in DSM/External Devices and it was showing as being ok.

How do I stop the creation of thumbnails once the process has started, and do I download the app from the Synology website to take over the thumbnail creation?

Cheers,
bangkokbrian

Update: I found the app on the synology website and have downloaded it - not yet tried it though.

While YMMV, I just set up a DS1512+. I have avoided upgrading from DSM4.1 to 4.2 because of buggy reports, and lots of them. Might be worth installing 4.1 before you get too far along :)

Synology state that you can't install an older version of the DSM so I went the other way and downloaded the just released latest version. Problem still not resolved.
I've logged a support call with Synology so I'll see what they have to say.

By the way I downloaded the photo uploader app and I've been using it successfully to upload my 16000+ photos to the DS213+. Thanks for letting me know about it.
Everything else is working perfectly with no problems.

Cheers,
Brian

I'm pretty sure that's not true. Might be a good idea to check out the Synology Forum off their website, I recall seeing a thread about how to downgrade. Again, just a thought.

I have DSM 4.0. Works fine. No glitches for a long time.
When DSM 4.1 came out, I read about lots of gripes from early adopters.
So I skipped it.
DSM 4.2 came out - and there are more gripes from some. Maybe I'm seeing the inevitable 10%. Many report "no problems" but don't say if they are using what features.

I looked at what's in 4.2 vs. 4.0 - nothing compelling for me.

So I procrastinate upgrading.

i'm with you on that :). 4.2 is only on it's first updated version (3211), 3202 was pretty bad with crashing boxes and RAID's going bad when they weren't. It seemed especially bad when upgrading vs new. 3211 looks to be way more stable for those upgrading, but I'll still give it some time for sure.

OP, if you DO have 4.2 on your box, I would strongly suggest you ensure it's running 3211 before you get too far along in your setup.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I have updated DSM to 4.2.3211 and as I said previously everything seems to be working OK except File Station.

I'm still waiting for a response from Synology to my support call.
I'll let you know the outcome.

Cheers
Brian

Update: I've been searching all over the place and finally found the problem and a solution to it.

It appears that it was Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 that was causing an issue with File Station.
On uninstalling the 2013 version File Station worked ok and when I installed the older Kaspersky 2012 File Station still worked - so interim success.

As far as I know Kaspersky have not resolved the problem with the 2013 software.
