New Around Here
Hi

I have the DS213 model, and so far I am really enjoying it.

I have installed the VPN package on it, and have established connection to it from my smartphone and my laptop.

When I am on my smartphone and are connected, I have the external IP and all that, but when i visit a specific site it says that I am blocked due to I am not within the country?? Geo-blocking yeahh, but how can i be connected and not yet get access to the site??

I live in sweden and work in denmark, when i am in sweden it works fine, thus a swedish site, but when i am in denmark and VPN connect to my NAS, i get connection but a still blocked from that site??

Any thoughts??

Geo Blocking

Changing your IP using a VPN doesn't necessarily prevent Geo Blocking.

It is possible that the site you want to connect to is using the SSIDs of nearby APs to determine your real location. There are extensive data bases of SSIDs and the related MAC addresses that can be used to locate your position quite accurately.

Also Smartphones and many tablets have GPS chips that locate you within feet. If I connect my Iphone using a VPN server in London 4,000 miles distant then do a Speedtest it will connect me to the nearest Speedtest server just 28 miles distant.

You can't fool big brother.

Well i am 100% positive that my phone do not turn on gps.

How can i test whether my vpn really works. I mean that i am really using the remote default gateway when i am surfing and not my own?

There must be a workaround this...

Where Am I

One way to determine what your external IP is and where it is locates is run a speed test using Speedtest.Net. Run it before starting your VPN and after. Not always accurate, but it is a start.

Then try what is my IP or some other IP identifying app or utility. These won't always return a result. When I use StrongVPN using open vpn I get an answer. When I try using PPTP and HMA it refuses to return a result.

Regardless of what you find out you can not totally cloak the location of your cell phone regardless of how dumb or smart it is. To make a call or send data the phone has to connect to a cell tower. If the tower is in Copenhagen then you are not in Sweden regardless of what your IP might be.
