The DS214 is based on a dual-core ARM-chip, manufactured by Marvel. This processor is clocked at 1066 MHz and is accompanied by 512 MB of DDR3 memory. External storage can be attached to the NAS through USB 3.0.The more luxurious DS214+ features a 1.6 GHZ dual-core Intel Atom processor, the CE5315. This 32-bits chip doesn't just provide such functionality as HyperThreading and Virtualization Technology, but also offers hardware-based H264 video-encoding, which can transcode for DLNA devices.

Considering that the DS213 and DS213+ were announced in late August last year, the timing seems just about right.

Anyhow, I had been considering the DS213j, which compares favorably to the DS213 in Synology's benchmarks - but is the processor in the DS214 worth waiting for? (DS214+ is probably overkill for me). Can anyone with some knowledge of the Marvell processors say how this new processor may compare to the 2.0GHz single core used in the DS213?

I have the DS212.
Not often is the CPU heavily used in what I do... mainly if I use an NTFS USB disk, it takes a lot of CPU.
Even when the CPU utilization is really high, the user interface is still very responsive.
The relatively small RAM size doesn't seem to be an issue - but I don't run a web sever of my own on this NAS.

I did elect to pay more for the 212 rater than the 212j; my rationale was that I'll use this thing daily for many years and don't want to be tempted by every new model release. Flimsy rationale, I know.

I'm holding off in getting the 213 just to see what happens when the 214/214+ gets released. The 213 is just about the prefect NAS for my purposes but I can wait another month to see how things pan out.

Still no news about any kind of release except in a few non english e-shops.
Btw, there doesn't seem to be a 4 bay atom c5300? The ds414 is freescale based according to a thread in the synology forum. A ds414+ though is nowhere to be seen. Hopefully there is ome as the 412+ was released quite long ago....
