So I want to centralize all my media in a NAS, using four of these HGST http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HHAJRU0/?tag=snbforums-20 4TB drives.
I've done some research and it seems Synology is the way to go for me, and they have robust Windows Phone support for their apps so that's a bonus :D

The DS414 and DS415play are similarly priced, there's only a 70~ dollar difference between the two. One has a Marvell Armada XP chipset, one Intel Evansport. I don't need the dual NICs of the DS414, don't really need media transcoding on the DS415play, but it may be neat to have I suppose.
I would assume the Intel SoC has better performance in the OS, even if it isn't Silvermont...

Any insight? I know the latter isn't really on the market quite yet, but I kinda want to get one soon so I'm not sure if I want to wait to get more user feedback on the play model.

In terms of the RAID situation, I'm probably going to do SHR, maybe even the 2 disk redundant variant (SHR-2) since I only have 4 TB of media as of now, so 8TB total usable is probably enough for a good while.

Be sure to check prices at Newegg.com too.
My only advise:
1- transcoding... You have to spend a LOT to get enough speed for this. You might want to save $ and do transcoding on a hot PC, non-real-time.
2- Be sure you need a 4 bay. I've had a 2 bay for 2+ years and it's only half full. And that's with non-RAID, non-SHR. Two volumes, with volume 2 being the time backup which keeps the last n versions of all files (with a size limit), based on your choice of key folders. And be sure to have a big fat USB3 drive for backup.

Yeah I hear you on the transcoding speed part, seems the QNAP one with the intel Celeron is a lot faster, but 200$ more. I don't even need real time transcoding, I do my watching on my gaming PC or Surface Pro hooked up to a TV or whatever. So the client devices do the grunt work with madvr etc. But if my NAS can do decent real time if I want to watch something randomly on a phone or low powered device, that could be cool. The price difference makes it a non issue between those two models.

Also I do NEED 4 bays, I already have a full 4 TB drives worth, and I obviously need room to expand, hence the additional 4 TB I would get in a SHR-2 setup, or extra 8 TB if I just go with the normal SHR.
