DSL-AC68U factory reset after firmware upgrade question

Occasional Visitor
Being doing some reading on the forum and see multiple suggestions to do factory reset after upgrading firmware (not just my model ASUS router, but others too).

Can anyone tell my why this should be necessary? Not sure I know of another device (laptop, router, camera etc) that I've ever owned that required or was recommended to do a factory reset after a firmware upgrade.

Seems a massive hassle considering the number of settings and configuration that would need to be inputted again and again...

It shouldn't be necessary to do a factory reset after a normal incremental upgrade.

A factory reset is usually recommended if,

a) you are experiencing problems you cannot resolve.

b) there has been a significant change from the previous firmware version to the current one. e.g. you have gone from 380.x to 384.x, or from Merlin's firmware to stock Asus firmware.

In the cases above the default values of some of the NVRAM variables may have been changed and therefore your current settings may not be optimal anymore. Doing a factory reset should put your router into a known good state.
