EA-N66 Questions

Hi all,

I just picked an EA-N66 to mate up with my new AC68U, and have it set up as a bridge, into a dumb switch which connects my Apple TV, Roku, and BR player. If someone could help me out with a couple of questions I'd appreciate it...

1. I'm on the 'g' firmware, 'h' is out...any issues upgrading? Also can it be upgraded wirelessly or should it be connected/hardwired?

2. Should DHCP override be enabled or disabled?

3. I did the original connection via WPS, should I have done it differently? I notice I don't have any choices in the admin pages to select the band, and it's showing 2.4, would prefer 5Ghz band.

It is working reasonably well, but I'd like to make sure it's optimized.

Thanks!

Is anyone using this device, or should I be looking for something else?

Appreciate you having a look, thanks.

1. I suggest you upgrade directly connected(Wired) to the EA-N66. Wireless is not a reliable method.

2. DHCP override can be disabled without any issues. This is mostly introduced because some users were having issues with the EA-N66 redirecting clients to the EA-N66 as gateway. If you never experience it, it is okay to leave it on.

3. WPS will likely default to 2.4Ghz unless you add the wireless network through the EA-N66's UI. If you were to upgrade your EA-N66's firmware, you would need to access the UI anyways.

I own the EA-N66. It is an excellent wireless device. I have several home theater devices connected to it through an ethernet switch. I am using it with the RT-N66U. I am not a networking expert, but I will attempt to answer your questions based on my experiences:
1. The 'h' version firmware is a better firmware in my opinion. It is very stable. I always upgrade the firmware through an ethernet cable connected from the EA-N66 to my laptop.
2. 'Enable DHCP Override?' is set to 'yes' on my EA-N66. The RT-N66U is acting as my DHCP server, and all WLAN clients obtain an IP address from the RT-N66U and not the EA-N66.
3. When I set mine up initially, I set up my laptop with a static IP (i.e. 10.0.1.2) that was within the EA-N66 (default IP is 10.0.1.1) DHCP IP domain. I then connected to the EA-N66 with my laptop with an ethernet cable, and typed in the IP address of the EA-66 (10.0.1.1). I entered the default username and default password, entered the GUI, and ran the 'Quick Internet Setup' wizard. Through this wizard, you can decide whether to connect to the 5GHz band or the 2.4GHz band. I get much less interference and much faster speeds on the 5 GHz band. I use the EA-N66 in 'Ethernet Adapter Mode'.

Asus has made a couple of helpful setup videos. You can take a look at:

Good luck.

Thank you both, I'm grateful for your detailed responses. Off to update firmware :-)

I use the EA-N66 in 5GHz Ethernet AP Mode with h fw and have no problems.

It works will connected to a Linksys E4200v1 running TomatoUSB fw on a Gigabit LAN in AP mode.

I did try to run it as a range extender (test) and it did work, BUT... in my environment it seemed to be attempting to run the range extender off one MAC address.

This is fine if you only use one WiFi device in range extended mode, but as soon as you added more devices the service failed.

I reverted back to a Linksys RE1000v1 range extender as the EA-N66 may not work well with TomatoUSB fw and the E4200v1 router in range extended mode.

The EA-N66 does not support WDS.
