New Around Here
My internet connection comes from an ethernet port behind a router/modem from my ISP. They've set their router to open and forward all ports to my asus 66U router (merlin RT-AC66U_380.61_0). I'm not sure if they've given me incomplete information (maybe I need to contact them) but the connection only works when I plug it into a LAN port rather than the WAN port. As long as I set the default gateway of the DHCP server on my router to the ip address of my ISP's router, nearly everything works perfectly. I can manage my own DHCP and assign my own LAN addresses, forward ports to them, set DNS server, etc.
The problem is, the router itself doesn't realize that it has a WAN connection and gives me the error "Internet status: Ethernet WAN: Please check that the ethernet cable is connected properly to the WAN port." The clients all receive internet just fine, because they use the default gateway, but the router itself doesn't.
That wouldn't normally be a big deal, except that I need to set up an isolated guest WiFi. An isolated client can't access the default gateway because it's on the LAN, therefore isolated guests cannot get internet access.
Ideally I'd like to find a solution that lets the router itself realize it has an internet connection, which should keep my from having any possible future configuration issues, but I'm open to any suggestion that allows me to keep router-mode features while also allowing isolated guest network clients to access the internet.
From some research it sounds like I can modify my ebtables to give the isolated network access to a specific ethernet port, which would be fine, but I have no idea how to do that or if it's actually possible.
