So I have the RT-N66U and I am having issues trying to make my external hard (WD 1140 1TB) drive visible on my network. The first time I hooked up it months ago I had no problem whatsoever, and it was formatted NTFS it would show up on my network, I could stream movies from it and copy files back and forth, no problem. As of now the External HD will show up in the webui, but will not show up on the network window. I don't remember having to do anything special other then turn on the Share option. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try enabling the wins server and set as master browser, then adding the router's LAN ip to the WINS field on the LAN dhcp page.

Both WINS server and master browser were already enabled. Doing what you said didn't change anything.

the webui shows the capacity and how much is used? drive functions fine attached to a computer? have guest access enabled ?

Yes, shows capacity, works fine attached to my comp, and I do have guest access enabled.

Same problem when i plugged in a thumb drive. I'm stumped...

i know a few FWs ago there were many issues with network mapping a HD and it showing up and a whole plethora of other issues. so are you on the most recent FW for n66? if not, update. if so, i think you may be able to manually map the drive on your computer. the instructions are out there somewhere. i just forget the steps to take. its pretty simple though.

I'm using Merlins .44 build right now. But the thing is I never had an issue before not being able to see the external drive on my network. It's like its not there, or the router is not allowing it to be visible.

I installed 376.44 tonight. Had a lot of problems with the external hard drive. Ultimately, I roll-backed to 374.43 and hard drive is now okay. I'd recommend trying the same.

I would recommend you format the HDD as EXT3 and you will have absolutely no problem with it (no matter the router firmware version). And on the network, SAMBA shows it as NTFS. ;)

Will you please show me as a noobee how to format the drive while still attached to my router. I don't know linux that well and need to know what command and how to log in (ssh?) to format the drive. I just moved over to the 87R and I can't access my external drive usb3.0.
Many thanks.

look on the internet. format it through a computer not through the router. much easier. there are many free tools out there to format the drive. if you are using windows and you format to ext3 then you will want to download paragon extfs for windows if you want to access the hd from a windows computer after formatting it.

I put a Linux Mint on a USB drive and booted up with it (without installation) and I used GParted to format the drives. After it finished, I connected them to the router and everything works perfectly.
