So my 87U kicked the bucket, after only 1.5 years. Random reboot, 5GHz disabled and refuses to enable, various memory faults in syslog.

Good excuse to grab an AC86U though? :D

Looks like I can finally make use of YazFi on my 5GHz guests too! Looking forward to shiny Merlin on HND :)

Good for you bud, a great router!!

Yes, luckily Amazon are refunding me on the 87U so I'm not even out financially (which was my main concern)
How old was the 87U? Doesn't sound like you had it that long.

Wow! What is Amazon's return policy! How did you qualify to (or whatever) send it back?
Not sure, I went on "get support" and it said i was eligible for up to 2 years from purchase. I described the issue, stated what I had tried (incl. factory reset/stock), and they said best approach is for them to refund me on return!

Excellent! Good for you man! Little guy gets the prize this time! :D

Woah, that’s a great return policy. So you’re dead set on a 86?
Unless there's a better choice - I've seen the recommendations here and elsewhere, and I do use VPN clients heavily on the router so the potential speedboost is welcome

This is excellent after sales service!

The only recent change to the router was installing Diversion, obviously that was to blame! #sarcasm :

Amazon's normal return policy is 30 days. But they, like any other company, are obliged under EU consumer protection law to repair/replace a defective item up to two years after purchase (and partially up to 6 years in certain circumstances).

With that said, they could have been difficult and asked him to prove that it was a manufacturing defect and not him throwing it against a wall ;). But unless you're a "serial returner" I've found Amazon are pretty good about this sort of thing. That's why I always try to use them for high value electronic devices.

I would expect the law to apply to the manufacturer, not the reseller?

The purchase agreement is established between the seller and the buyer, so the seller is responsible for taking care of warranty cases. Some of them try to redirect a customer to the manufacturer, but that's bad practice, as they're fully aware it's their responsability.

From my past experience in sales of consumer electronics I know sellers have agreements with their distributors to compensate for a certain percentage of revenue losses yearly. And the chain of distributors have similar agreements with manufacturers. So in the end, it might affect all parties to a certain level, but in cases like this where a full refund is issued, fortunately the buyer is not affected. Great way to keep your customers satisfied :).

No, it's always the seller. The transaction is between the seller and the buyer, not the manufacturer. The law is deliberately framed like that so that sellers can't avoid their responsibilities (like they did in the past) by referring people to the manufacturer's warranty. Of course that doesn't mean that the seller can't go to their supplier and get compensation. It also doesn't mean you can't go straight to the manufacturer if you want to. The consumer protection law is in addition to the manufacturer's warranty.

If I buy a product from a local shop and it falls apart after two months, I expect to be able to take it back to the store and get redress. I don't expect them to tell be to write to some "no-name" factory in China and ask for a refund.

It doesn't matter whether it's a router, a pair of jeans, or a kettle, the same rules apply.
