I just finished reading the wrap-up of the most recent kits here: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanw...ine-gigabit-ethernet-adapter-reviewed?start=1

Looking at both the top rated Zyxel and TP-Link devices, there doesn't seem like one with a good wi-fi access point built in. My use-case is PS4 remote play + Plex on a NAS + large file transfers from my MacBook Pro, which only has 802.11N. I want to directly connect my PS4 to a homeplug adapter. I also want a homeplug adapter with wi-fi under my bed in the bedroom, such that if I use Remote Play on my Vita, I know it literally has like a 5 ft distance from the access point and everything is on a "wired" connection on the backed. I also will be doing plex streaming over this at the same time. And in yet another room, I want my MacBook connected directly in order to have better than 802.11N performance (no AC on my model) when I do large file transfers back and forth between my computer and my NAS.

My geek desire to have the fastest networking equipment is pushing me to want a homeplug wireless device that is compatible with the top rated homeplug devices.

My more practical side is telling me that I should just get this kit, and a couple extra powerline adapters.

My router is an RT-AC68U w/ MerlinWRT. Suggestions?

confused... HomePlug/HPNA devices with an ethernet port can connect to any WiFi access point. Or any WiFi router re-purposed as an access point. Or to an ethernet switch to which you can connect an access point and wired device.

The IP over powerline products I've seen (WiFi extenders that plug-in) don't disclose what standard or not that is used on the power line. There are LOTS of such products.

What was confusing? I linked to the products I'm looking at. I am looking at a few different homeplug devices, some of which have a wifi access point built in. I understand I could get a second, discrete device, but I'm interested in not needing to do that. I'm looking for the best product "suite" that gets me a few high throughput homeplug nodes as well as one w/ an access point.

Then you are going to be stuck.

That said, Wifi is typically faster than homeplug over short to medium distances. So odds are excellent that any HP/AP all in one, the wifi is going to be faster than the homeplug connection same room and possibly even a room over.

Figure a halfway decent AP built in to it and running 40MHz 2.4GHz, you'll probably net 140-180Mbps, and I'd bet in most circumstances a GOOD HP connection between bridges is probably only going to get you 80-120Mbps, so the home plug/powerline is going to be the limiting factor here, not the wireless of the built in AP.

Makes sense... The primary issue for me is the amount of interference on the 2.4ghz line, and the PS4 only has 2.4ghz. I think I'll get the TP-Link kit for the PS4, and for my MacBook, I'll just go ahead and upgrade the WiFi card to 802.11ac. That's probably the most prudent. I won't worry about putting an access point in my bedroom for portable gaming systems right now. That's probably my least common use case.
