New Around Here
Our house is wired with CenturyLink gigabit fiber and we have the 100/50 service level. In the basement is a hub of sorts where the CenturyLink Technicolor C2000T modem / router sits - the wireless is disabled. From there, I have a Cat6 run to a closet on the main floor. That closet has an Asus RT-AC68U router in access point mode. I need the router here to get coverage through the whole house.

Today I did a test run and I can use the Asus router through PPPoE if the router is in the basement and in standard router mode. The CenturyLink router is a little limiting and I'd like to remove it.

Today, and I think the traditional setup is:
Fiber inbound via Ethernet -> router -> any switches -> clients
...................................................-> any access points -> clients

Can I run?
Fiber inbound via Ethernet -> gigabit switch -> Router -> clients

The other option seems to be buying a new router for the basement and keeping the 68U as an access point on the main floor. I'd rather not spend that money.

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to run your 'last' iteration. Is the CenturyLink modem what's in-between your fiber cable and ethernet? If so, it might also be the converter. If that's the case, you will have to reconsider. No guarantee it will cover your entire home but at least it should be a good start.

Why not contact CentryLink about using their fiber directly in a switch? There are several sizes of fiber out there. You also need to know the mode. Most ISPs use single mode which is a laser instead of a diode. Once you figure that out more than likely you can add a fiber module to your switch which will match.

Just remember the fiber will not be firewalled until you feed it to a router.
