First NAS: basic needs, ready for OS migration, internal backups

New Around Here
Hello,

Both my graphics workstation and my laptop have reached the ten-year mark, still doing fine under XP Pro (peer-to-peer workgroup config).

I have completely dropped out of the tech/networking field, so I need your advice. I'm thinking about a first NAS, with these requirements:

- Main use: file storage
- 2 x 2TB internal drives, no RAID
- Timed backups from one drive to the other. I've had a lot of experience with backup HW/SW, and IMHO most BU software sucks, so a good, simple-yet-powerful solution for these internal backups is important. One feature that often stinks is "search through/list past backups".
- LOW NOISE
- Low power
- Reasonable price
- Support for XP apps such as Adobe Bridge CS6 and XYplorer (thumbnails etc.)
- Ready for MacOS and Android (if the computers died tomorrow, I'd replace the workstation with something Apple, and the laptop with a Samsung tablet. I currently exchange files with my Samsung Galaxy S phone via SMB)
- Most basic media streaming
- Access via Internet would be nice, but not crucial.
- LOW NOISE, REALLY ;)

In advance, thanks for any comments, ideas, recommendations...

Backing up one drive to another internally is NOT BACKUP. Stuff you don't want to lose needs to be backed up to a physically separate device.

All NASes speak SMB, as do most other OSes. So everything should be able to access the shares on any NAS.

NASes in general don't keep multiple copies of backups. Exception are new BTRFS based NETGEAR ReadyNASes, which support unlimited volume snapshots.

christianrr,

With support for XP ending in less than a month (after 12 long years) and your wish of having this connected and possibly accessible from the net along with XP support, I would suggest you have another strategy in regards to your O/S and program choices.

If I read your original post correctly.
