I have used a Buffalo Linkstation 300 Gig connected directly to one computer for backup for four years at home. I now have 4 computers on a Gigabit network, as well as a PS3 and printers. I want to use a NAS for media streaming to the computers and the PS3, and for scheduled backup of all computers. After spending days looking on this site and reading reviews, I think that I have narrowed it down to 4 possiblilities. Now I need help choosing. I am NOT a savvy network guy, so very complicated system setup or maintenance is a disadvantage.
Goals, in order of importance:
1. Relatively uncomplicated setup and good user interface.
2. Reliability - I don't want to spend a lot of time tinkering/ fixing problems.
3. Combination of speed for streaming and security for data loss - RAID 5
4. DNLA, uPnP compliant for PS3 connectivity
5. Standby with wake-on-LAN
6. Power efficiencies
&. Minimal noise
Options: (I've read the recent posts, especially concerning the last two - still unable to decide.)
1. Buffalo Tersastation III - reviews have praised it's user inteface, not as fast as some of the others
2. Netgear ReadyNAS NVX - ?more "tech knowlege" needed, faster
3. Qnap TS-459 - ? faste read/write than the Netgear NVX
4. Synology DS1010+
Final question: I've had the current BuffaloLink for 4 years and owned various compters for the last 18 years and never had a hard drive failure (I hope I didn't just hear the crack of DOOM!) I am surprised to hear that some people are having 1 hard drive failure per year of use - is this common with a NAS?
Thanks in advance.
