First time NAS, decided on Synology...a few questions

Nihilism

New Around Here
After seeing a post by 'stevech' pointing me in the direction of the internet demo of Synology's DSM I have decided that I want to buy a Synology NAS as I have heard they are of good build quality and after trying the software myself I am quite happy with it.

....however...

There were a few things I could not find in the 'help' section of the demo.

My main ( possibly only ) use of the NAS will be to stream .WAV files to my Yamaha RX-V3071 receiver ( it is DLNA 1.5 and UPnP compatible ).

I wanted to know if after running the setup wizard and choosing a password etc and configuring device privileges if you can have the unit remember the password and sign you in automatically.

I also turn off all my devices when not in use ( at the wall ) so I wanted to know if it would force me to sign in manually after powering it off.

The reason I ask is because I would like it to be fully autonomous as my receiver can read the files from any DLNA compatible device I don't think I should have to start up my PC, or log into the android browser just to start a local device.

It is even possible that after copying all my music to it that I will disconnect it from my network and just have the network cable directly plug into my receiver, as it will perform no other functions as far as sharing or backup is concerned.

So is this possible or are there ways around it ( where it can stream the music to allowed devices even when not signed in )?

So of the 117 views of this thread not one person knew a media player that could pass through video or pictures from an NAS via HDMI...

...so very generous of this apparently elitist community.

I have a Synology but I don't use the media server but rather a generic file server with certain folders shared.

You want a NAS to feed video via HDMI? I think some very high end NASes can do that, but affordable NASes serve content as IP data on the LAN, to computers and to media players (which are quite cheap these days), or to TVs and Blueray players that have LAN interfaces (as do mine).

From the first post, it sounds like the receiver is on the same Home LAN subnet as the server. So is a password and authentication needed?

My network is password protected, but after ticking to allow local devices to access my media library in WMP and also sharing the folder where those files were located with 'everyone' my receiver simply picked up the files and now I can stream them to my receiver.

Now I just need to pick up an NAS to replace the PC in this function.

I don't know whether to buy the 212+ or wait for the 213 series ( not the 213Air ) but I'm hopeful the 213+ might have HDMI, which would save me having to buy a media player to stream to...which would create all sorts of O.S ( Synology vs XMBC vs Android etc etc ) handshaking issues.

DS212 exceeds my modest 4TB needs.
Speed quite adequate.

Yeah, speed is not an issue so much as connectivity. My receiver is networked, meaning I can stream audio via DLNA/network cable from my router ( from the NAS ) to my receiver without the use of a PC or even a TV/display.

But as for photo and video...my TV is a 2 year old Sony Bravia KDL-55EX500 which is not networked, so the concern over whether to buy now or not is related to the requirement of either a media player or a networked blu ray player.

All good though. I've all but given up on media players that support non H.264 flash ( regular youtube/flash videos ).

If I pick up a DS212+ and a Yamaha BDP671 it will be able to stream the pictures and video and the receiver can stream the audio ( without need for the BP ).

Thanks for your help, god damn this NAS stuff is complicated.

I've been building my own PCs for years but this is something else ( in terms of compatibility etc )

I've found the Synology DSM to be easy after a couple of hours of initial learning curve. But I'm a geek.

I'm surprised you cannot find a media player to suit your needs... stream to HDMI input of TV.
