I am getting a lot of dns errors, don't think I've ever seen even one before now hundreds.
Jul 28 18:16:21 dnsmasq[414]: server xxx: resp: 0x00 query failed for xxx
Jul 28 18:17:09 dnsmasq[414]: server xxx: resp: 0x00 query failed for xxx

Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas how to troubleshoot/ fix the issue? :)
It may help to mention I am not using default ISP dns servers.
That logging is new and will only show up if you have the logging level set to show 'debug' priority messages (if you set the loglevel to the default, show messages greater than debug instead of all, they will not be logged) . There was a discussion in another thread about dnsmasq 'retired or failed' counts when you would dump the dnsmasq stats, so I added this debug level log. What is logged does match the stats dump., and may be retries (if the destination only shows up once) or fails (if you see it fail on multiple dns servers).

One other hypothesis is that these may be returns where the TTL of the response is invalid. I tend to see these logged primarily for 'tracking' domains. Normally I see a fail count about 2% of my DNS queries.....others have seen up to 15% of the queries retry or fail. Either one can easily generate 100s of entries.

Hey John,
So I updated to the latest 18E1 firmware and there is a setting in the "traditional qos" page that I have no idea what to do with and I'd appreciate your input.
"WAN packet overhead" - which one to chose? I have a pppoe llc connection - AC66U connected to a bridged modem. Do I chose the first one with many options and "bridged pppoe llc" at the end OR do I chose the second option of just "pppoe llc?" Or maybe I should just leave it at the default "none?"

Thanks in advance! Oh, and thanks for all the hard work. Much appreciated :):):)
I was actually hoping that someone would ask this question re: the Merlin builds first :)
From my (rather limited, and quite possibly mistaken) understanding this is really to support ISPs that are somehow using PPPoA connections., in which case the correct setting would be dependent on the ISP.
For now, I'd leave it default to none, until someone more knowledgeable than me can chime in.

@RMerlin - Can you help out?

Well, some nutter turned my logging up to 8. Wonder who that could have been? I guess I was troubleshooting something... ;) What is the default level, 4? I only ask because I use a script to move the log and set the log level to 1 for now. Seems a bit low so I was wondering what your syslog default level is.

Don't you just hate it when that happens?

The default is log_level=7, and messages generated by the router are log_level 5 (Both of which can be changed in the gui under Administration > System).

EDIT: Just some additional clarification...by router messages, I mean messages generated by the router unique code. The individual open source components use their own priority levels.

Thanks John for the new build! Things have been great on my AC68U & N66U. However the connection between AC68U & N66U is used to 1 Gbps now only shows 100 Mbps Full Duplex under Tools > Sysinfo. Did I do something wrong?

So one is set up as an AP? Can't think of anything that was changed that would affect the link speed. First thing I would try would be to reboot both boxes via cycling the power button....power both down, then power up the main router first and let it complete the boot, then power up the AP.

My TM-1900 is on 17E8 ... before I update to 18E1 do i need to flash RT-AC68U_3.0.0.4_376_3626-g9a8323e ?

thx
Check the Bootloader (CFE) level on the Tools page in the gui. If it's 1.0.1.6 you should do the 376 update. If it's 1.0.2.x you are good to go.

EDIT: Since it's a converted TM-1900, if the level is 2.x.x.x, stop. Look for posts by @Engineer on how to properly complete the conversion to an AC68.

thanks john for the update !
would it be possible to have a github updatewith the new code?
Will be up in a while. For various reasons, I wanted to check if there is a way to control access via github (so far, it looks like not possible on a free account).

Yes. N66U is setup as an AP. I already powered cycle the whole system several times to no avail

Yes, it has 2.x.x.x ... I read over @Engineer 's CFE update process, looks quite involved.

Is there any real need to update? The only issue I have is with Wifi cameras and my Irrigation Controller frequently disconnecting - and I'm not sure if the Router or not (there is nothing in the house that interferes, signal strength and quality look good.

I have a weird thing. My setup is R7000 running stock with IPv6 disabled connected to CM500 modem and R68 running the latest 18E1 in bridge mode. My htpc is connected to the R68 by wire. Other devices are connected to R7000 wirelessly. If I run speed test on laptop connected to R7000 I get speed test for IPv4 only as I expected, but if I would do speed test from htpc I get IPv4 and IPv6. I also tried to test IPv6 and I get similar result. Laptop reports that IPv6 is not available and htpc is visible IPv4 and IPv6

Any ideas?

Thanks

To be honest, I'm not sure what will happen and I haven't kept track of all the changes on the TM-1900. I seem to remember that the original TM-1900 shipment CFE didn't have the lockout for other than TM-1900 code. Since you are currently on V17, you may have one of those boxes and likely will be OK as long as you NEVER try and load any ASUS OEM or Merlin firmware.

I'd give it a day or so to see if @Engineer has anything to add...

What kind of control?
If people can see it, they can clone/fork.
If you mean a free private repo, then try gitlab.

By R68 I'm assuming you mean an ASUS AC68?
What is the address that is shown for the ipv6 test? If it begins with fe80: its a link local address that is being established with the R7000 and is somehow being used for the test (although I didn't think that the media bridge set up ipv6, but something may be strange running in 'mixed' mode with an R7000).

Well....I still can't think of anything that would cause this with respect to the firmware. Next thing I would try would be to replug the Ethernet cable on both ends, try a different set of ports on the router/AP, or try and run a new cable temporarily as a test.

Also, I seem to remember there was a hardware problem on some of the early N66's with flakey Ethernet jacks. How old is the N66?

Yes, it is ac68r. The interesting part it that IPv6 is disabled

Your htpc is tunneling ipv6 via Microsoft Teredo....

On the htpc from an admin command prompt, enter
Code:
netsh interface teredo set state disabled

Not sure if you'll need to reboot the htpc for it to take effect.
