Hi I got a N66U with Merlin 354.28b1 I would like to know if anyone can recommend me a Free OpenVPN server to test and use the OpenVPN client, I googled I found VPNBook, is this service any good? mostly is to bypass country restrictions not torrents... does anybody have any experience to configure this service on the router, I only see that give only one certificate, I´m a newbie on VPN, however I got configured on the router openvpn server and works great, if there are any guides or free service better than vpnbook please let me know and give me some guidelines to configure it. thanks.

I use vpnbook, they always change the password which is kind of a pain.

Here is a list (http://www.vpngate.net/en/) of a bunch of vpn servers in different countries that will let you easily bypass country restrictions.

For example there is on in the UK so you can watch BBC iPlayer in the user after vpning to the UK.

vpnbook is in romania, so the BBC iPlayer for example doesn't work.

There are servers in Canada, japan basically all over the place.

I have used vpnbook but only for testing purposes of the VPN client code - I never used it for real, so I can't comment on its performance. I can confirm it does work fine with Asuswrt-Merlin however.

Vpn

If you want to get around geo blocking in order to stream video I doubt if a "free" VPN is going to work for you.

Bandwidth has a cost and the better and best VPN providers charge $5 - $8 per month to provide a fast enough connection to stream video.

If all you need is minimum bandwidth when connecting at the local coffee shop to download emails securely then a free service may work for you.

I use Strong VPN and they work very well and I download on average of 60 GBs of data and video a month using their service. When using them I can stream HD video from a server over 1,200 miles away. I can stream at a constant rate of 4 - 5 MBps.

The best VPN providers have hundreds of servers in multiple countries and robust connections. As with most things in life you get what you pay for.

of course you are right, but the free ones i listed work very well

VPN Functionality

I gave VPNBook a test and it worked fine for a quick secure link.

Would not work for what I use my VPN for most and that is unblocking geo blocked programming and streaming video. I need US based servers for US programming as well as servers in other locations/ countries that I follow.

VPNBook currently has two European servers and on their home page they ask people not to run P2P applications because they are bandwidth constrained. While I didn't try watching a video I would imagine streaming video longer than YouTube clips would not be very smooth.

Also while they are "free" they do ask for donations.

...obviously, another option is - if you've got some relatives or good friends around the world - make sure they have an ASUS and make them run the openvpn server.

...sorry, couldn't resist :D
