I've had a bare metal FreeNAS box working like a champ for months now, and thought I'd try to set up a virtual one using an old HP laptop running WinXP Pro SP3.

In VirtualBox, I created a machine and installed the latest stable build of FreeNAS. So far, so good.

I wanted to add a Firewire disk. I plugged it in...but FreeNAS couldn't see it (e.g., when I try to add the disk in Disk Management, there's no firewire drive listed). I also tried re-booting with the disk already attached -- same result.

Is there something I'm missing? A missed setting? A service that's not set up?

This is the first time I've tried to use VirtualBox and FreeNAS, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks!

I'm a newbie at this, it's true, so please bear with me....

I decided to boot my HP laptop with a FreeNAS CD on bare metal, just to see if it would recognize the Firewire port -- it did:

However, when I load the virtual FreeNAS machine under VirtualBox, there are no "fw...." entries in the log. (It seems to find USB ports, but no Firewire.)

Is there something I need to set in VirtualBox to get it to see Firewire? I've looked at every setting 10 times, so if it's there, I'm just not seeing it....

Thanks....

I almost created another thread on this same issue. I've been trying to get usb drives to map through virtualbox on a freenas vm that I was evaluating. Can't for the life of me get it to work. Not sure if this is a limitation of freenas or virtualbox. As many people that seem to be using freenas around here, thought someone would have offered up some help.

I'll let you know if I come across a setting, otherwise I'll stick around for the ride...

Yeah, I was gonna do the cheesy "Bump" thing, but decided against it.

If you (or anyone) has any insight, it would be most appreciated...there's a surprising dearth of info about running FreeNAS under VirtualBox to be had....
