New Around Here
Hi all,

I've just bought the Router RT-AC5300 and experiencing some serious speed issues.
I'm thinking about returning the router and buying another router like the netgear nighthawk.
But before i do so, i hope you guys can help me.

Situation:
I have a gigabit connection from my ISP (Tweak Netherlands).
From the glass fibremodem there goes a glas cable to the RJ-45 converter.
From the RJ-45 converter there goes a UTP-CAT6 to my Asus RT-AC5300.
From the Asus RT-AC5300 there goes a UTP-CAT6 to my laptop.

Threw cable doing a speedtest (downloaded from app store, ookla)
Im getting 600mbit down and 950 up.
Threw Wi-Fi on 5Ghz i get 170mbit down and 900 mbit up.

When i plug the UTP-CAT6 directly from the RJ-45 to my laptop. I easily get 930mbit down and up.
Somehow the router is eating a lot of mbit while im connected on cable, which obiously effects the 5Ghz wifi speed as well.

What i've Tried:
Factory reset the router, using the reset button.
Checked for firmware update. Running the latest stock Asus firmware:
Current Version : 3.0.0.4.384_81219-g786875a

Flashed the latest Merlin Firmware to my router:
Current Version : 384.15

Rebooting the router.

With both firmwares im getting threw cable variating from 500mbit to 700mbit down.
Up speed is always around 900. I've tried google and youtube tweaking the router with what people advised but it made things worse, so i restored the router to factory settings.

Can someone please help me? Is there an way that i can get my 900mbit down threw cable?
Also threw cable im getting 700 a 800mbit someties. But threw 5Ghz wifi not more then 170mbit (while beeing halve a meter away from my router)

Best Regards,

Emre

PS: if the problem can't be resolved what other router would you guys advice? that is also a Triband with gigabit ports and is able to send gigabit speed threw 5Ghz.

Did your reset after installing the current firmware?

OE

You could try turn off QoS and Trend Micro related stuff could help and try older Merlin like 384.13.

@Emreak053 and after you reset it, did you use a saved config file? If you did, you effectively invalidated the reset. :)

How do you mean saved config file?
The method was like this:

I logged in on the Asus RT-AC5300 went to firmware clicked on upload, uploaded the firmware it went loading till 100% and then it was finished.
Then i clicked on reboot router and thats it. Didn't saw anything with a saved config file.

@Emreak053 then you did not do a reset to factory defaults to the router.

You may want to follow the M&M Config and possibly the Nuclear Reset guides in the link in my signature below to get your router and network back to a good/known state. :)

Thx bro I'm going to check it out now

Followed the M&M Config and nuclear reset.
Flashed to the latest Merlin firmware.

Cable speedtest:
560mbit download.
500mbit upload.

5Ghz Speedtest:
156mbit download
660mbit upload.

Seems like using the merlin firmware even made my router speed worse compared to the asus stock firmware...

In the beginning of my router on cable i would get 900+mbit down and upload. And the only problem i had was getting 170mbit down on 5Ghz Wi-Fi

Went back to the Asus stock firmware

Cable speedtest:
650Mbit download.
900Mbit upload.

5Ghz Speedtest:
200mbit download.
650mbit upload.

@Emreak053, seems you did it wrong?

First, flash the firmware you want to use. Then do a full reset. Do not use saved settings file to restore from. Do not use the same SSIDs that your devices have ever used before.

I tried this but it didn't help solving my speed issues.

I'm back on asus latest stock firmware. Factory resseted and new SSIDS.
On Cable UTP-CAT6 now im getting
950mbit down
950mbit up

But still on 5Ghz im getting
180mbit down
750mbit up

Used wifi analyzer.
Changed the channels and MHZ of the 5Ghz but it didn't help.

Any other solutions? Any other configurations for the 5 Ghz to get it up to 500mbit download/upload?

Disable airtime fairness (on 2.4 also). For Wireless Mode I believe auto is the preferred setting. You've already tried different channels so that's not it. Do you have another wireless client to test with? Since you are now getting good speeds when wired it seems as if the router is mostly functioning properly. I wonder if the client could be part of the problem. Most modern cell phones have 2x2 ac which should be able to get around 600 Mbps which if successful would lead me to focus on the laptop's settings perhaps.

Assuming Windows on the laptop... observe the Wireless connection status link rate while performing the speed test... what is it and does it remain stable? For example, a 2x2 AC link rate should stay pegged at ~866 Mbps.
