I've read the reviews, looked at the charts and tried to figure out which of these two would be the best buy. I could use some help. The GoFlex Home 2 TB NAS is available on Amazon for $160, while the 1 TB LinkStation Pro LS-V1.0TL is going for $170.

Both NASes have pretty much the same features. It looks like the LS-V1.0TL has better read/write performance, I think. The GoFlex Home isn't on the charts.

My question is this: Is the performance worth paying $10 more for half the size?

I plan on using the drive primarily for backup of a Windows desktop and Windows laptop, but will also be using the media serving (to PS3 and iTunes) and remote access features.

User reviews seemed to have concensus that the NAS software (memeo) in the Seagate unit is not suitable.
The LinkStation Pro LS-V1.0TL - seems dated.

Do you really need a NAS to do the simple backups you describe? Versus USB external?

I would prefer a NAS over an external drive so that all pcs/laptops/media devices on the network can access the files. When the pc finally dies, I only plan on getting laptops going forward. I don't want to have to go get the external drive and plug it in just to access the data.

My other qualifications are that it is easy to use and doesn't cost so much that the wife will skewer me. I started out looking at the Iomega Home Media Network ($95) and would have been OK with that had I not seen how low it is on the performance charts. That is where I found the LinkStation. I found the GoFlex somewhere else and read the review here. But unfortunately it isn't on the charts.

Regarding your comment
The LinkStation Pro LS-V1.0TL - seems dated.
The review for that model just came out in October this year and there is an ad on the page as I am typing listing it as a new product. Am I missing something?

Buffalo NASes are good basic NASes. And the portal-based remote access is easy to use.

Only caveat is that the drives are not really user-replaceable and most LinkStation models have 1 year warranty.

Anybody have any opinion on the GoFlex? Is the extra size and easy to replace drive a good reason to go with it? How does it compare in speed/performance to the LinkStation Pro LS-V1.0TL?
