In previous Asuswrt-Merlin firmware, the wanface on an RT-AC88U was called vlan2, but in the most recent beta, it's called eth0.

Is this a typo or a permanent change ?

Nothing has been changed there. The hardware interface has always been eth0, while vlan2 is the VLAN for it.

For DHCP/static, use what's in the wan0_ifname nvram setting. For PPPoE/PPTP/L2TP, use pppoe_ifname's content.
