I moved to new location, inherited a network that was Open using an old router. Purchased a 87-AU, using Merlin firmware. Now want to secure. Setup is apartment upstairs accessing Internet via WiFi (iphone, Apple tv, etc.). My stuff on a Network that is both wired (desktop Win. 10) and Wifi (cellphone, tablet). Now I want to secure the network.

From within Merlin, can you help me to do this? What concerns me, is that the people upstair won't be able to access the Internet after the security is turned on.

Thank you.

Paul.

Connect to 87AU. under Advanced settings > Wireless > General (2.4 and 5ghz) enter a strong passphrase at WPA Pre-Shared Key. Notify neighbours of new passphrase..

Thank you netwrks. I know this is very basic stuff I'm asking, but just the same, it's appreciated.

You say, "Notify neighbours of new passphrase." I presume that the next time they access the Internet, a Window will pop-up where they will enter the passphrase?

What you say, "passphrase" is something like this okay? 1ABzSxfOVhxLCyLWc

Or would this be better? gopher massif recreant shuttle hire

Again, a basic question.

Regards, paul.

Yes they would be prompted for a passphrase. Option one (something like it) for a passphrase is more complex and harder to crack than dictionary words..

I'm not seeing "WPA Pre-Shared" in the Authentication Method drop down menu.

Choices showing are:
WPA2 - Personal
WPA2 - Auto - Personal
WPA2 - Enterprise
WPA2 - Auto - Enterprise

Use WPA2-Personal for your SSID - if the neighbors are sharing your WiFi/Broadband - put them on the Guest Network, and there you should be able to...

A) Set a Guest Password, or leave it open if you're a nice guy...
B) Enable AP Isolation - this gives them their own path to the internet, and reduces your LAN exposure to their clients...

Thank you.
I have uploaded a screen shot of where I'm at now. In particular, is the number 3200 in the Network Key Rotation Interval okay.

Regards, Paul.

Thanks to the advice here, I think I'm okay. I created a Guest network with password and have implemented WPA2-Personal security. Am also recently using 1Password implementing tougher passwords.

Regards, Paul.
